Vice President-elect JD Vance recently told a hilarious story about the “fake news” media while speaking at an event for the America First Policy Institute. Recounting his favorite moment on the campaign trail, the Ohio senator told the crowd about a time when his 4-year-old son roasted a group of reporters, calling them “fake news” to their faces.
Vance began, “You know, people ask me what my favorite day on the campaign trail all the time. Clearly the best day of the campaign was the day we won.” He continued, “Maybe the second best day to campaign for all was the day my four-year-old walked into the back of the plane, the Trump Force Two plane, and told the media they were all fake news,” Vance said as the crowd burst out in laughter. “Then not 15 minutes later our German Shepherd puppy walked back there and took a sh*t,” he added, leading to more laughter from the audience.
Using the incidents as a metaphor for the broader sentiment toward the mainstream media among MAGA Republicans, Vance said, “I think that speaks to how we think of the fake news in this movement.” Pivoting to a more serious note, the incoming vice president praised the institution. “Let me just say this organization. And the most important thing, like you say, is just thinking, thank you for doing what you do. Thank you for put your name on,” he said.

Throughout the campaign, conservatives praised Vance for his ability to brilliantly and confidently handle attacks from hostile figures in the media. One of the best examples of the incoming vice president demonstrating his quick wit and unwavering composure in the face of a tense exchange was his interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper.
During the interview, Vance called out Tapper on his network’s journalistic integrity. “Now, Jake, we also should remember, I mean, step back a little bit. Ask yourself a basic question about network integrity. You guys talked about the Russia hoax nonstop.” Tapper, interjected trying to defend CNN, stating, “The FBI was investigating it! The FBI was investigating it so we were covering that—”
Vance fired back, “And so you took the words of unnamed FBI agents and put them on your network as though they were the gospel truth. You did it again and again.” Continuing, as Tapper tried to insist that Vance’s characterization of what CNN did was “false,” Vance said, “A viewer of your network would’ve believed that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin conspired in 2016. Now that was totally and preposterously false.” Further, Vance said, “You covered it in a way that gave credence to anonymous sources [and] accusations. You did it yourself. Your network did it, Jake.”
Vance pressed Tapper, “Can we talk about the issues that Americans care about?” Tapper shot back, “I’m talking about things that Donald Trump has said…If you have an issue with whether or not he’s talking about the economy enough, that’s between you and your running mate. I’m talking about things he has said this week.” Vance then said, “You guys seem to care more about Donald Trump’s past than the future of the American people. We’re running this campaign on making the American Dream affordable.”
