California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass showed up at the World Cup game, but didn’t receive the warm welcome they were probably expecting. In fact, the crowd let the two political leaders know exactly what they thought of them by booing them loudly, a reaction that stands in direct contrast to Bass’ recent primary win in the City of Angels’ mayoral race.
The moment was captured on video from someone in the crowd and shows Newsom with a cheesy grin on his face flashing the thumbs up and in general being cringy, while his son stands next to him looking extremely uncomfortable. On the other side of his son stood Bass waving at the crowd enthusiastically in an attempt to ignore the disapproval of fellow residents.
The footage is going viral on social media platform X, where lots of folks offered their hot takes on the incident and shared their feelings about the failed leadership of both individuals. One user wrote, “When you’re so out of touch it’s almost delulu armor.” Another individual commented, “Few people are more loathed in Los Angeles than Bass and Newsom.”
Someone else pointed out that Newsom’s son was a fan of assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk and noted how miserable he looked to be at the event with his dad. “That’s Gavin’s son who loved Charlie Kirk. He looks like he loathes his father,” the user said. In response to that comment, user John Quinn said, “Hopefully he has some men in his life who are showing him you don’t have to be a giant cuckold.”
The video caused some in the comments to question how, if Bass is so unpopular, she managed to win the primary and move forward to the runoff race in November. “They’re in CA getting booed? Yeah, tell me Bass led the votes in the primary!” the individual said. During election night, it looked as if Bass would be facing off against former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, running as a Republican, in the runoff.
But as luck would have it, a bunch of mail-in votes rolled in later in the week that elevated socialist city councilwoman Nithya Raman into second and sent Pratt to third, meaning he would not proceed to the runoff after all. The situation reminded many conservatives of the 2020 presidential election when former President Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump, thanks largely to mail-in voting, leading to cries of election fraud.
Later in the thread, someone pointed out that you can definitely hear the boos, despite the mainstream media’s claim to the contrary. “Definitely hear the boos even though main stream media is saying it’s not true. And his son looks like he hates being there,” the user said. Someone else noted the look of discomfort and disdain on the son’s face, saying, “The kid’s face says it all. Yes, your Sparkle Ken and his sidekick are a**holes.”

Newsom has been working hard to position himself for a presidential run following his final term as the Golden State’s governor, despite his many failures as the state’s governor. One user gave a reason for the two leaders’ cheery disposition, writing, “Because they know local news will change the audio to cheers and accolades or remove the audio and do some voiceover stating that they were greeting all the wonderful fans there.”
