Recently, a man was arrested in Gwinnett County, Georgia, after an armed robbery at a Chick-fil-A restaurant at around 4:30 in the morning. 51-year-old Tommie Lee Williams charged into the restaurant armed and wearing a mask at the franchise located off Stone Mountain Highway, according to authorities. Williams is further accused of threatening a delivery driver who was in the restaurant with a handgun.
However, undeterred by the weapon, the heroic delivery driver managed to fight off the armed robber. Williams reportedly demanded that the individual open the safe, but he maintained that he didn’t know the combination before deciding to defend himself and engage Williams. The Gwinnett County Police Department posted on Facebook on July 31 that they had arrested the suspect who was responsible for the armed robbery on the morning of July 1.
Authorities noted that the suspect gained entry to the restaurant by smashing a rock through the drive-thru window. Upon climbing into the kitchen area, the suspect confronted the delivery driver with a firearm, threatening to kill him if he didn’t open the safe. Subsequently, the armed robber and the driver engaged in a physical altercation for several minutes.
“Officers initially responded to the store located at 5075 Stone Mountain Highway around 4:30 a.m. after the victim called 911 to report the robbery attempt. When officers arrived, the victim told them that he was a delivery driver for the business and while he was inside working, the suspect smashed through a drive-thru window with a rock and entered the kitchen area. The suspect told the victim that he was going to die if he didn’t open the safe and pointed a handgun at him. The victim told police that he didn’t know the combination to the safe, so he decided to fight off the armed robber. The two men were captured on surveillance video for several minutes fighting over the gun,” the post continued.
The Gwinnett Police Department noted that the victim was able to uncover WIlliams’ face. “During the physical altercation, the victim was able to pull the suspect’s mask off his face. After several minutes of fighting, the suspect fled the location through a rear exit door and was gone when the police arrived,” the message said.
Furthermore, authorities could trace the crime back to Williams by identifying the vehicle commissioned in the crime. “Investigators were assigned the case and immediately began canvassing the area for evidence related to the suspect’s identity. Detectives were eventually able to identify a vehicle they believed the suspect used to get to the location. That vehicle led to the identification of Tommie Lee Williams (51 years old),” the statement continued.
“Investigators obtained warrants for Williams for armed robbery, aggravated assault, burglary in the 2nd degree, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and criminal damage to property in the 2nd degree. Williams was arrested on July 31 with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department,” the Facebook post concluded.
