During a hearing of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) questioned Secretary of War Pete Hegseth concerning President Donald Trump’s mental state. Jacobs attempted to support her questions by citing recent posts made by the president on his Truth Social accounts, slamming him for the language used in them with regard to the war effort in Iran.
An aide placed behind Jacobs then displayed the various posts, such as the one where Trump said an “entire civilization will die tonight” if the Middle Eastern nation didn’t come to the negotiating table when a firm deadline had been set to discuss a ceasefire agreement. The batch also included an image generated by artificial intelligence that allegedly portrays the president as Jesus.
Jacobs asked the secretary, “Do you believe that the President is mentally stable enough to fulfill the responsibilities of Commander-in-Chief?” Being as this isn’t Hegseth’s first rodeo with the press, he was having none of it, responding, “Did you ask Joe Biden the very same question for four years?” He then argued that it was Democrats like Jacobs who defended the former president when he wasn’t able to speak coherently.
The California congresswoman replied that during the 2024 general election, Biden “was not our presidential nominee.” Hegseth then made it clear he did not want to continue engaging in such exchanges with Democrats, outraged at the obvious hypocrisy of Jacobs’ question. “I won’t even engage with the level of disparagement that you’re putting on the commander-in-chief. He’s the sharpest and most insightful commander-in-chief we’ve had in generations,” Hegseth replied.
During one part of the questioning, when Jacobs produced the image of Trump as Jesus, she asked Hegseth, “How can I explain this next post to my constituents?” She then added, “I’m Jewish, so this doesn’t really bother me, but my understanding is that this is quite offensive to many Christians. So how do you explain this post?”
“I’m not here to explain the post. We have an incredible commander-in-chief, okay, who puts our troops first,” he responded. After asking about Trump’s mental health, Jacobs brought former Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene into the mix in an attempt to prove that concern over Trump’s mental state was bipartisan, according to The Daily Beast.
“Marjorie Taylor Greene said he’s out of control and he’s gone insane. Candace Owens said the 25th Amendment needs to be invoked. Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson—who you used to work with—Alex Jones, Stephanie Grisham, the list could go on,” Jacobs stated. “So how do I explain to my constituents that while they are in harm’s way, their commander-in-chief is posting these unhinged posts?”

When Hegseth first entered the room for the hearing, accompanied by his wife, he was greeted by protesters, one of whom was holding a poster that called for his arrest. The hearing unfolded as the war effort to stop Iran from getting its hands on a nuclear weapon hit its 60th day. Before the hearing, the president published another post on Truth Social.
The post included an image of Trump sporting a slick suit and rocking a rifle with the caption reading, “No more Mr. Nice Guy!” The president, who is clearly getting fed up with Iran’s stubbornness, said, “Iran can’t get their act together. They don’t know how to sign a nonnuclear deal. They better get smart soon! President DJT.”
