Thursday, January 9, 2025, was the first anniversary of the death of Melania’s mother, Amalija Knavs. It was also the day of the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. As such, all five living former presidents attended at Washington DC’s National Cathedral, and all of the former First Ladies other than the vacation-bound Michelle Obama attended as well. The event featured a host of snubs for the grieving Melania Trump.
The snubs started as soon as the President-elect and his gorgeous wife and future First Lady entered the National Cathedral, as though former Vice Presidents Al Gore and Mike Pence stood and shook hands with them, Karen Pence, wife of Mike Pence, refused to do so, coldly turning away from Melania and refusing to greet her.
The snubs of Melania continued to roll in. Coming in after the Trumps was former President Barack Obama. He skipped past them without shaking hands but did greet both of the former Vice Presidents, both of whom had stood to greet him. Obama then didn’t snub Donald Trump, chatting to him after sitting down with him.
But, notably, though Barack Obama chatted with Trump and at one point was even seen laughing with him, he snubbed Melania in that he was never seen greeting her. Many took the chummy chatting between President-elect Trump and former President Obama to mean that Obama’s former frantic rhetoric about Trump being a dictator was all for show.
In any case, the next snub up was delivered by both former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura Bush. They, once entering, skipped immediately past Donald and Melania Trump, not greeting them with even a remark, much less a handshake. They went on to greet Barack Obama, who George W Bush tapped in the stomach.
Commenting on the snub online, “Captain Morgan,” a pro-MAGA account, posted the clip of the Bushes snubbing Donald and Melania Trump and argued that it was a good thing, as it shows Trump and the neocon former president aren’t pals. He said, “George Bush snubbed Donald Trump and Melania at Jimmy Carter’s funeral. I’m extremely happy that Trump isn’t his pal.” Watch the clip here:
This isn’t Bush’s first incident regarding Trump. One of the more notable ones came when he, Speaking during an April of 2021 appearance on the Today show with host Hoda Kotb, attacked the current Republican party, and thus MAGA, in quite negative terms. He said, “I would describe it as isolationist, protectionist, and to a certain extent nativist.”
Continuing when Kotb asked if he was “disappointed” by the direction the party took after he left office, Bush said, “It’s not exactly my vision. But I’m just an old guy they put out to pasture.” He later said, after noting he wouldn’t speak out regarding Trump, “What’s really troubling is how much misinformation there is — the capacity of the people to spread all kinds of untruth.” He added, “I don’t know what we’re going to do about that. I know what I’m doing about it. I don’t do Twitter or Facebook or any of that stuff.”
