WATCH: Gutfeld Asks One Clever Question that Sends Jessica Tarlov into Meltdown Mode

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld sent Jessica Tarlov scrambling during a heated exchange after asking why liberals care that other Americans like President Donald Trump. Tarlov answered by attacking Trump’s character and warning about the policies his supporters help enact. That response set off a shouting match involving Gutfeld, Jesse Watters, and Paul Mauro. Gutfeld repeatedly cut through the crosstalk with one question: “Why should you care that I like him?”

The exchange unfolded on Fox News’ “The Five” during a discussion of Trump and the hostility his supporters face from liberal friends and relatives. Gutfeld argued that Trump critics should examine why someone else’s approval of the president bothers them so deeply. He suggested that some of their anger may come from personal resentment and years of emotional investment in opposing Trump. Watters asked Tarlov to explain the liberal reaction.

“I’m okay with you hating Trump. Why aren’t you okay with me liking him?” Gutfeld said. “If you could just look in the mirror and answer that question, liberals, you would feel so much better. Why does it bother you that people like Trump?” He continued, “Perhaps there’s a large role in your dissatisfaction. It might be your own personal resentments.”

“You may play a large role emotionally in how you feel about Trump,” Gutfeld added. “Maybe if you get over that, you’ll spend less time and effort being so miserable.” Watters turned to Tarlov in the video of the exchange and asked, “Do you have a theory about why liberals care so much that other people like Trump?” Tarlov answered, “Because he’s, like, a completely morally bankrupt person.”

“But why should you care that I like him?” Gutfeld asked. Tarlov replied, “I have accepted that you like him, but I think it’s hard for people when they care about someone.” Gutfeld immediately interrupted: “Whoa, whoa, whoa! This is the point of it. Why do they care? Tell me why. What’s underneath?”

“Well, care leads to voting, and then voting leads to bad policy,” Tarlov said as the panel began talking over one another. She added that Republican victories “make life harder” for people like her. “If he was your friend, I’d be much more chill about it,” she told Gutfeld. “But because you like him, he’s my president.”

Watters rejected Tarlov’s claim that liberal hostility toward Trump supporters was based on morality. “She’s misdiagnosed. It has nothing to do with morality. You don’t care about morality,” he said. When Tarlov insisted, “Of course we do,” Watters fired back, “Your party doesn’t support standards of morality. You can do drugs, you can be homeless, you can hit people, r-pe people, let other murderers into the country.”

“You can do all kinds of things. They don’t judge,” Watters continued over Tarlov’s objections. Mauro jumped in and said, “They’re gonna let the Son of Sam out of jail,” referring to convicted serial killer David Berkowitz. Watters then declared, “You guys apologized to a guy who tried to shoot the president.” Tarlov attempted to respond by accusing Republicans of persuading evangelicals to support “a guy who has cheated on every single wife he has had.”

“But who cares if I like him?” Gutfeld asked again. Tarlov said, “I’ve said I don’t care. I have accepted it,” before Gutfeld pressed her about why her liberal peers care. Tarlov finally answered, “Because it reflects poorly on you.” Gutfeld responded, “Why do liberals care that we like him? It’s because they cannot get themselves emotionally out of the way, and it bothers them. They know that they might be wrong.”

“The sunk cost of hating somebody rips you apart,” Gutfeld continued as Tarlov argued that support for Trump carries electoral consequences. Tarlov asked why the panel cared about an old video of Barack Obama and defended his infamous tan suit. “That suit was fly, and just let him have his stupid museum,” she said. When Gutfeld insisted that he liked the suit, Tarlov accused him of failing to defend it at the time, prompting him to answer, “I wasn’t even on ‘The Five’ back then. I would not have.”
