Florida Republican Rep. Kat Cammack recently unveiled plans to introduce legislation that would bar members of the House of Representatives from displaying the flags of foreign nations in the chamber. The initiative follows celebrations from Democrats, which included waiving Ukrainian flags while the $61 billion foreign aid package was passed.
“Watching American representatives pass out & wave Ukrainian flags in the United States House of Representatives chamber infuriated me. As we speak, my team is drafting legislation that will prohibit the display of foreign nations’ flags on the House floor. If there is one room in our country that should only have the American flag present, it is this room,” Cammack wrote on X, sharing footage of the foreign aid bill’s passage.
The congresswoman called on social media to rally support for the legislation, stating, “Tag Members of Congress who you want to co-sponsor this bill!” Despite receiving heavy criticism from within his party for his role in the foreign aid bill, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) sounded off on Democrats for waving the Ukrainian flags. “It is in violation of decorum to wave flags on the floor,” Johnson noted.
Johnson further explained that “these are not normal times” in the House of Representatives, calling for only “one flag” to be flown in Congress. “These are not normal times here in the House or around the world as we all know,” Johnson told press members. “And, we saw a disturbance here on the House floor just a bit ago. I just want to say simply what I think most people around the country understand and agree, we should only wave one flag on the House floor. And I think we know which flag that is.”
Other Republican politicians joined in, voicing their criticism of Democrats waiving the flag of another country than the one they are elected to serve. “Put those damn flags away. It is a disgrace to display any other flag than the American flag in the House Chamber!” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) wrote in a post on X. Rep. Eric Burlison wrote, “Democrats waiving Ukrainian flags on the House floor tells you everything you need to know about their priorities. Ukraine first, America last.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson has received immense pushback over the foreign aid legislation, where some members of the GOP are calling for a motion to vacate. The American Tribune reported on Johnson’s new spending bill, which reportedly includes $300 million for border patrol in Ukraine, but nothing for America’s open southern border.
Johnson had noted in 2023, “I made this very clear. Again from the very beginning when I was handed the gavel, we needed clarity on what we’re doing in Ukraine, and how we’ll have proper oversight of the spending of precious taxpayer dollars and American citizens.” Many claim the speaker has not upheld this promise he made when assuming the speakership. Watch the Ukraine flag stunt below:
Rep. Thomas Massie sounded off on Johnson saying, “I just told Mike Johnson in conference that I’m cosponsoring the Motion to Vacate that was introduced by @RepMTG. He should pre-announce his resignation (as Boehner did), so we can pick a new Speaker without ever being without a GOP Speaker.”
