WATCH: Georgia Rep Ditches Dems, Joins GOP after Being “Crucified” and “Abandoned” by Former Party

Mesha Mainor is a Georgia state representative who has represented Georgia’s District 56 in the State House since January of 2021. Though elected as a Democrat, Rep. Mainor has switched parties and is now a Republican because of how viciously she was attacked by her former party for backing a school choice bill.

She explained her decision to switch parties in a statement to Fox News Digital, telling that outlet that not only did her fellow Democrats not stand by her when she stood up for school choice and for the police, but that they went on the warpath against her and “crucified” her for taking those principled stands.

Speaking about that to Fox News Digital, she said, “When I decided to stand up on behalf of disadvantaged children in support of school choice, my Democrat colleagues didn’t stand by me. They crucified me. When I decided to stand up in support of safe communities and refused to support efforts to defund the police, they didn’t back me. They abandoned me.”

Continuing, she made the common observation that the Democratic Party commands support from more than 90% of American blacks but has done nearly nothing to improve the lot of that demographic, particularly in big cities like Atlanta, which have turned into hell on Earth because of rampant crime and endemic poverty.

In her words: “For far too long, the Democrat Party has gotten away with using and abusing the black community. For decades, the Democrat Party has received the support of more than 90% of the black community. And what do we have to show for it? I represent a solidly blue district in the city of Atlanta. This isn’t a political decision for me. It’s a moral one.”

So, to help put an end to that, she switched parties and joined the GOP. She said that it is “humbling to be embraced – for the first time in a long time – by individuals who don’t find fault in a black woman having a mind of her own and be willing to buck the party line.”

Then, discussing what policies she will work with her new party to advance, Mainor said that she wants to focus on school choice and other pressing issues in Georgia, telling Fox News Digital, “Education and the importance of school choice has been – and will continue to be – a key focus of mine. But outside of education, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Georgia General Assembly to tackle the most pressing issues facing our state and to help grow the Republican Party, helping us focus not just on preaching to the choir but growing the congregation.”

She later appeared on Hannity to discuss how the policing and school choice issues and how Democrats responded to her stances on them led to her leaving the Democratic Party. Watch that here:

And, in a tweet about why she left, Mainor said, “My name is Rep. Meisha Mainor and today I made the decision to leave the Democrat Party. I represent a blue district in the city of Atlanta so this wasn’t a political decision for me. It was a a MORAL one. I will NEVER apologize for being a black woman with a mind of my own.”
