With Gavin Newsom back in the news as some on the right speculate that the Democrats will try to somehow get him to be the nominee in 2024 instead of Biden, or that he will try to run in 2028, some funny, old videos of him getting trolled have been making a comeback. One such video comes from 2018, when the Newsom campaign got hilariously trolled by a conservative guy with nothing more than a rental truck and a funny idea.
As background, Newsom was touring the state of California in 2018 in a massive, highly distinctive campaign bus, as many high-level political candidates do to make visiting numerous campaign stops more possible and easier to manage.
That bus tour lasted for two months and ended at San Diego State University, where Newsom hosted a rally. SDSU associate professor Charles Toombs, commenting on why the faculty supported Newsom, told local media outlet KPBS, “When it comes to higher education, the candidates for governor could not be further apart.”
Continuing, Toombs went on to add, “Gavin Newsom wants to expand access to the CSU, and limit tuition hikes for students while continuing the state’s reinvestment in the CSU system to ensure faculty have the tools and time to deliver a high-quality public education.”
In any case, the Newsom campaign bus was, like most political buses, highly distinctive. It said “Gavin for Governor” and “Blue California Tour” on the side, and “VOTE” on the back. So, anyone driving near it could tell it was the Newsom Campaign bus, which was the goal of that.
But one bright guy figured out that, as people could tell it was the Newsom bus, driving near it presented the opportunity for a hilarious troll. He rented a truck and drove near the Newsom bus with slogans saying “CAUTION FRAUD AHEAD,” thus mocking and trolling Newsom just by staying around him. It also directed people to a website, cautionfraudahead.com.
Watch the video of that hilarious troll here:
One person on Twitter, posting a clip of the troll truck rolling down the road, said, “😂 Brilliant👏🏼 #GavinNewsom drives around in a big blue $35,000 per day rental bus gets trolled by a guy @cautionfraudahead with a $120 per day rental truck and a bright idea. #Newsom”
The website the truck directed people to visit said, “Californians Can’t Afford Gavin Newsom!” It added, “Our state is becoming more and more unaffordable for the average Californian. There is a shortage of affordable housing, taxes and gas prices are among the nation’s highest, and homelessness is now a crisis.”
Then, attacking Newsom, the site said, in 2018, “Gavin Newsom has been Lieutenant Governor for the last eight years, and California’s problems have gotten worse. Should we really continue down the same path?#CautionFraudAhead” Highlighting the good aspects of John Cox, then running against Newsom, it said, “John Cox is an experienced small business owner. The son of a single mom, John Cox worked his way through school, grew his business through hard work and innovation, and he created jobs. John Cox is a problem solver. As Governor, John Cox will bring new thinking and solutions to California. John Cox will help solve our state’s housing affordability crisis by eliminating obstacles and red tape that block new housing from being built. #HelpIsOnTheWay”
The site also highlighted Cox’s record on taxes and public safety. It was apparently backed by a group called Californians for Accountability, about which it said, “For two decades California conservatives have been losing ground. As a result we have lost elections, influence and our voice. There are many, many conservatives in California. We need to speak up and engage with confidence and commitment to our principles. We just haven’t been fighting back. That’s why we formed Californians for Accountability: to go back on the offensive, to shine a light on the irresponsible, ineffective liberals who run our state and many of our communities, and to replace them.”
