WATCH: Fox News Anchor Discovers He Has Cancer Live on Air During Broadcast

In a surprising moment captured live on air, during a segment from “Good Day Philadelphia” segment, FOX29 host Mike Jerrick was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a common, treatable skin cancer, by dermatologist Dr. Joanna Walker. Discussing the standard procedure for identifying skin cancer, Walker detected a cancerous spot on Jerrick’s elbow.

Obviously surprised by the diagnosis, Jerrick expressed that he’d noticed the spot but never suspected cancer. He said he was relieved to have discovered it so quickly and anticipates a speedy recovery after a scheduled surgery.

Noticing the basal cell carcinoma, Dr. Walker said, “It has all the features of the most common type of skin cancer, which is also very treatable when it’s caught early.” Reacting to the sudden news, Jerrick asked, “What are you going to do to it, burn it off?”

Calmly responding, the doctor advised that it needs to be “cut and stitched, but you do need to remove it so it doesn’t keep growing and take over normal skin.” Putting the host at ease, she said it was “a very slow-growing type of skin cancer” and unlikely to spread.

Reacting to the unexpected news, the anchor stated, “I did say that we should have her bring her [micro]scope because I wanted to check out a couple of things on my arms, so that part was planned, but I never really thought it was going to be skin cancer.”

Speaking later about his reaction, Jerrick noted, “When she blurted it out, I didn’t get alarmed or anything, It was just like, ‘Oh dang, I should have done this a long time ago.’ I was more shocked that she said she was going to cut it out instead of burn it off — that’s where I got surprised.”

Unfortunately, this is not Mike Jerrick’s first run-in with the disease, as he was forced to take several weeks off in 2024 to address prostate cancer, prompting his community to share their wishes for his speedy recovery online.

Offering a personal anecdote, one user said, “I didn’t know this. I hope he had it removed. My husband had it in 2004 and a person he was working for who was in the medical field told him to just have the prostate removed. She said DO NOT mess around with radiation. Just get it out of your body. He did & he’s still good.” Offering more consolations, one comment stated, “Doc Lee is a great guy. He and his team did the same work on me 10 years ago. Tell Mike get well and back to work soon!”
