During a recent Fox News interview, former President Donald Trump weighed in on the controversial opening ceremony at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games that has sparked backlash from Christians all around the globe. The Republican presidential nominee claimed that the performance was a “disgrace” in how “The Last Supper” was supposedly portrayed.
The ceremony featured several displays centered around sexuality, transgenderism, and politics. However, one scene in particular causes uproar after it seemingly mocked “The Last Supper,” a famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, which depicts the final meal Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before his crucifixion. The Olympics featured a similar layout of individuals as the painting, except with a woman in the place of Christ and what appeared to be drag queens representing the apostles.
During the interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, the former president voiced his disdain for the controversial performance. “I thought the opening ceremony was a disgrace, actually,” Trump said. “I thought it was a disgrace.” Ingraham responded, “The mocking of The Last Supper. Catholics and Christians across the globe are outraged.” Trump replied, “I thought it was terrible.”
Trump further elaborated on his stance regarding the seemingly blasphemous iconography, noting that while he is “open-minded” toward everybody, the offensive display was a “disgrace” that wouldn’t happen under his watch. “We won’t be having a Last Supper as portrayed the way they portrayed it the other night,” he told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. “I mean, they can do certain things. I thought it was terrible … Look, I’m for everybody. I’m very open-minded. but I think what they did was a disgrace.”
The opening ceremony at the Paris Olympics has drawn outrage from many outspoken Christians and other high-profile individuals worldwide. Famous Christian actor Candace Cameron Bure gave her opinion on the controversial ceremonies that “completely blaspheme and mock the Christian faith,” adding that the Last Supper depiction in particular “was disgusting.”
“So to watch such an incredible and wonderful event that’s gonna take place over the next two weeks and see the opening ceremonies completely blaspheme and mock the Christian faith with their interpretation of the Last Supper was disgusting,” she said. “And it made me so sad. And someone said, ‘You shouldn’t be sad. You should be mad about it.’ And I’m like, ‘Trust me. It makes me mad.’ But I’m more sad, because I’m sad for souls.”
Furthermore, fitness guru Jillian Michaels, despite being a member of the LGBT community, also sounded off on the ceremony. “Dear fellow gays… We demand tolerance and respect but then make a mockery of something sacred for over 2 billion Christians. This type of hypocrisy and lack of understanding is a bad look. We get outraged when the extreme right bashes us, but then we do this shit. What kind of reaction do you think they will have towards the LGBTQ+ community after this. This is NOT how we break down barriers it’s how you build them,” she wrote on X.
