Derek Wolfe, a professional football veteran who spent a decade in the NFL, appeared on a podcast earlier this year to explain the exact moment the NFL supposedly decided to go “full woke.” Citing his firsthand observations having been in the league over the past ten years, Wolfe recounted how the anthem kneeling led by Collin Kaepernick inspired the NFL to fully embrace the woke ideology, carrying it through the coming years.
According to Wolfe, this mentality encouraged the league’s response toward contentious periods of unrest, such as the George Floyd riots and society’s ensuing fixation on progressive views about social issues. However, not mincing any words, Wolfe explained how he refused to sit back and silently go along with the agenda he vehemently disagreed with.
The former NFL player said, “And so the NFL, with that whole meal and sh*t, BLM, f*****g communist bullsh*t, Marxism farce that was going on there, that the whole kneeling thing made them lose all this money, right? People who are like, patriots and sh*t or like, f*** this, I’m not watching, yeah. So what do they do? They go during that George Floyd shit, they made us sit in a fucking auditorium and the victimization from f***** guys. I mean, these guys were telling them their f****** stories about how scared of the cops they were.”
Wolfe recalled his experience on the Baltimore Ravens, saying, “It got really bad. It was so f***** woke. The problem is, is that the guys that are actually like on free thinkers on the right. They’re afraid to say, because they’re scared, but me I don’t give a f*** up. I don’t I don’t care. I’m gonna say what I believe and I’m gonna be who I am, I’m not gonna hide and let you just talk s***.”
The American Tribune reported on other criticism of woke cancel culture after the NFL had to release a statement clarifying that it would not punish players for doing the “Trump dance.” ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith blasted the the fact that the league had to even release a statement about the innocuous dance in the first place.
“Here’s why I’m p—ed off, that the NFL had to even issue a statement about it. Because celebrations usually don’t warrant that,” he explained. “It doesn’t require a response from the league. So why was it necessary this time?” Smith seemingly called for people to get over the results of the election and move on with life. “You know why? Because we got a bunch of people still living with their heads in the cloud acting like they get to protest every little damn thing,” he continued.
Smith continued, “When you got people walking around wondering whether or not they’re echoing the right pronoun. Wondering whether or not that was gonna cost them their job or being PC because, God forbid, your opinion is different than the average folk walking around in America. Lord knows what would happen to you. That’s what America regressed to.”
