Speaking in a video posted to X on Monday, July 8, legendary college football coach Lou Holtz shared his thoughts on the SAVE Act and the idea of non-Americans voting in American elections, arguing that it is beyond absurd that non-citizens would be able to cast ballots in elections. His comments came in the context of the GOP-backed SAVE Act, which would require that voters provide proof of citizenship when voting.
Mr. Holtz’s comments were necessary given that most Democrats came out against the SAVE Act, making all manner of arguments about voting and ID access being out of reach for certain groups. At the root, however, was the basic idea that the act would help prevent non-citizen voting and one side seemed bizarrely opposed to that idea. It did, however, make it through the House on Wednesday, July 10.
Commenting on his interest in getting involved in discussing the matter, Mr. Holtz said, “I’m one of these individuals that no matter what’s going on, I want to be part of it. When I go to a wedding, I want to be the grom. I go to a funeral, I want to be the corpse. The list goes on and on. I got to a banquet, I want to be the speaker.”
Continuing, he took a clear stance on the idea that non-citizens would vote in our elections, calling it “not the right thing” and “wrong.” He said, “That’s why I’m going to stick my two thoughts about what’s going on in this country. This is about you can have a vote without being a citizen, that’s wrong. I don’t care how you twist it or turn it, nobody in this country should stand for that. That’s not the right thing to do.”
He then added that using legal tactics in an all-out effort to win elections is one thing, but it is entirely another to try to enable non-citizen voting in a desperate attempt to win. He said, “You win the election fair and square, that’s great, but we aren’t gonna have non-citizens vote. That’s just my thought and for anybody to say that’s OK, that’s hypocritical.”
Mr. Holtz captioned the video, which has since been viewed nearly a million times, by saying, “The idea that you can have a vote in this country without being a U.S. citizen is WRONG! You win the election fair and square. Non-U.S. citizens should not be able to vote!”

In another funny video posted to X a few days earlier, he joked about the now-infamous spat between Biden and Trump about golf, saying that he knows Trump’s golf game and thinks he could turn President Biden into mincemeat out on the links. He said, “One thing I’ve learned: Don’t let your mouth write a check your body can’t cash. Last week, President Biden challenged President Trump to golf. I’ve played golf with President Trump, and he is a great golfer!”
