Appearing on ABC’s “The View” on Thursday, December 5, United States Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), known for refusing to dress like a senator and for having at least some reasonable opinions on things, called out the case brought against President-elect Donald Trump by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Particularly, he said that DA Bragg’s case against President-elect Donald Trump was “politically motivated” and that Biden should pardon Trump.
Making the argument for pardoning, Bragg referred to the president’s pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, saying that in both cases, criminal prosecution was brought to bear on them for political purposes, something Biden said about Hunter’s situation in his explanatory note pardoning them but with which many conservatives disagree, given Hunter’s obvious guilt. Sen. Fetterman also argued that the politicization of the courts has led to immense, growing distrust of them.
Speaking on that matter, Fetterman said that it is “undeniable” the cases were politically motivated, leaving aside Hunter’s obvious guilt and the immense treasure trove of evidence on his laptop. He said, “I think it’s undeniable that the case against Hunter Biden was really politically motivated, but I also think it’s true that the trial in New York for Trump [was] political too.”
Continuing, he added that America’s public institutions have been hammered by this sort of politicization, saying, “In both cases, I think a pardon is appropriate and I think collectively, I think Americans’ confidence in these institutions have been damaged by these kinds of cases and we can’t allow these kinds of institutions to be weaponized against our political opponents and it’s very clear, both trials were politically motivated and weaponized on the other side.”
Then, after Joy Behar chimed in, Sen. Fetterman emphasized that he thinks the cases against Hunter Biden and Trump would “never have been brought” if their political opponents were not able to use the courts for their political benefit. Making that point, he called out those members of his party who cheered Trump’s conviction and gleefully claimed President-elect Trump is a convicted felon.
Arguing as much, Sen. Fetterman contrasted the typical opinions Democrats claim to have about criminal justice with what they thought in those cases, saying, “I’m talking about the New York trial, and Democrats on our side, there were some that were gleeful [saying] ‘well now he’s a convicted felon’ and all of those things.”
Adding to that, he went on to emphasize the criminal justice aspect and the obvious hypocrisy involved with how they treated it for Trump, saying, “and now for our party we are talking about criminal justice and we were talking about second chances and now all of a sudden, you’re like ‘well now he’s a convicted felon’ and all of these things.”
Using that to emphasize just how politicized the trial was, Fetterman said, “So clearly, both of those trials, the Hunter Biden one and the trial in New York for Trump, clearly that was politically motivated and those kinds of charges would have never have been brought unless one side could one day realize that they could weaponize that.” Watch Senator Fetterman discuss that here:
