An epic old video shows President Donald Trump immediately confronting a Democratic congressman who falsely attributed an inflammatory statement to him during a contentious congressional hearing. Trump refused to let the accusation slide, repeatedly demanded that the congressman identify his source, and then forced him to admit that somebody else had made the remark. Once the Democrat acknowledged his mistake, Trump demanded an apology to his face and received one.
The exchange occurred during Trump’s October 5th, 1993, testimony before Congress concerning the implementation of federal Indian gaming law. Trump, then one of the country’s best-known casino operators, clashed repeatedly with Rep. George Miller (D-CA) as lawmakers questioned his arguments about tribal casinos, regulation, and the danger of criminal organizations entering the industry.
The clip begins with Trump accusing Miller of refusing to consider the evidence and predictions he was presenting to the committee. “And for whatever reason, you have a closed mind. I don’t know why. Perhaps you could tell me,” Trump said. Miller responded that he had “a closed mind against evidence that is not substantiated” and against broad statements made about other people.
Trump warned Miller that his confidence could eventually prove misplaced. “You’re going to be very embarrassed in two years, sir,” Trump told him. Miller then attempted to challenge Trump using a comment from a radio appearance, according to the video shared on X.
“You go on a radio show and you say, ‘Now some drunken Indians want to come down here and open a reservation,’” Miller said. Trump interrupted almost immediately, flatly denying that he had made the statement. Rather than allowing Miller to continue building his argument, Trump demanded that the congressman prove the words had come from him.
“I didn’t say that, sir. Quote it. I didn’t say that,” Trump fired back. “Who said that? Who said that?” Trump then made clear that a quiet correction would not be enough, telling Miller, “I’d like an apology right now because I didn’t say that.”
Miller checked the source of the remark and discovered that Trump was correct. The congressman conceded that radio personality Don Imus, rather than Trump, had made the statement. “Mr. Imus said that,” Miller admitted after initially assigning the words to Trump.

The correction came only after Trump pressed Miller several times to identify who had actually made the remark. Miller had introduced the quote as evidence against Trump, but the accusation fell apart as soon as the source was double-checked. The words belonged to Imus, not Trump, leaving the congressman with no choice but to correct the record.

Trump did not merely move past the accusation. The congressman had publicly placed the inflammatory language in Trump’s mouth during a congressional hearing, and Trump wanted a direct acknowledgment that the accusation had been false.
“Okay. Could I please have an apology?” Trump asked. “You can have an apology,” Miller replied. The exchange ended without any attempt by Trump to belabor the point after receiving what he had demanded. Trump simply responded, “Thank you, sir.”
