Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) recently gave an interview on ABC’s “This Week” where she warned that Republicans will be “coming after abortion, contraception and IVF” if former President Donald Trump wins the election later this year.
According to the Democratic senator, access to abortion, contraception, and IVF are things that “we need.” She slammed Republicans for seeking to legislate and restrict the “trifecta” of these services that Democrats intend to preserve. Warren further suggested that if Democrats attain the necessary political capital, they will reinstate Roe V. Wade, which was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022.
Warren said, “We need three things. We need access to abortion. We need access to contraception, and we need access to IVF. The Republicans have blocked all three. They have laid out their plan to say they’re not going to permit women to have those three, and have access to them. The Democrats are fully on board. If we have the trifecta, the House, the Senate, and the White House, then we are going to make Roe v. Wade law of the land again. With Joe Biden in the presidency rather than Donald Trump, we will have as much protection for women as humanly possible.”
The progressive Democrat emphasized that the “extremist” GOP would be “coming for everyone” regarding these services the left prioritizes. The senator continued, “Understand this, I want to say this as clearly as I can, if Donald Trump is elected to the presidency, he and the extremist Republicans are coming after abortion, contraception and IVF in every single state in this country, not just the red states, not just the purple states, every state in this country. They’ve laid out their blueprint, and they’re coming for everyone.”
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Democrats have been on the defensive to protect abortion across the country. In April, The American Tribune reported on comments from Rep. Nancy Pelosi claiming that Democrats would ditch the filibuster to legalize abortion nationwide.
During an interview on MSNBC, Pelosi said, “People have to view abortion as a democracy issue. This is about freedom to make your own decisions for a woman. It’s a personal decision, it’s an economic decision at the kitchen table of America’s families, if and when they could expand their families or even start their families.”
Playing off the hypothetical scenario where Joe Biden is reelected and there is a Democratic House and Senate, Pelosi added, “We can enshrine into the law Roe v. Wade.” The congresswoman further disputed that it would require two-thirds of the Senate, adding, “No it doesn’t. It’s 60 votes is the Senate now but if we win 50-plus-1 in the Senate, 50 plus the vice president, we can overturn the 60-vote rule … The filibuster and pass it with a 51-vote margin. That’s what we need to do.”
Abortion has become one of the most contentious issues in American politics, where liberals generally view the termination of a pregnancy as a right while many conservatives, particularly Christians, see it as murder. Watch Warren’s interview below:
