A number of Democratic lawmakers seemed to be bored by President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on February 24, 2026, taking an opportunity during that time to get a little shut-eye. Georgia Rep. David Scott, a Democrat, was caught on camera snoozing as the president spoke. As you might imagine, the clip of Scott dozing off has now gone viral on social media platforms.
The clip has drawn the ire of Republicans across the country. The official X account for RNCResearch replied to the clip, saying, “Democrat Rep. David Scott is literally sleeping at the State of the Union. Democrats are unserious people.” Another commenter said, “They all love to snooze…for some of them it’s just show (to be disrespectful), but for others, they really do seem to doze off.”
Another user said, “At 80, I would cut anyone some slack,” which prompted a response pointing out that would be totally unnecessary if term limits were established for lawmakers in Congress. Scott is a representative of Georgia’s 13th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He’s held that seat since 2003.
Scott, who fell asleep around the 56-minute mark of the president’s speech, bolted awake as applause erupted around him. And, according to The Daily Mail, Scott wasn’t the only Democrat in the audience who was struggling to stay awake. Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) were both spotted nodding off during the address.
Suozzi’s nap was caught just moments before President Trump attempted to get Democrats to stand up in agreement with the principle that “the first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens — not illegal aliens.” The New York Democrat recently told his supporters that he failed them by voting in favor of funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
As the president addressed the nation about the progress of his administration, Suozzi had his head in his hands and appeared to fall asleep. When he finally opened his eyes, his face bore a pained look. The congressman later addressed his nap in a post on social media, saying, “I have always had a hard time staying awake during reruns.”
While President Trump was ripping into former President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party for their open borders policies that led to the current illegal immigration crisis, Wasserman Schultz scratched at her eyes. Moments later, she too, appeared to fall asleep. In an attempt to stay awake, the Florida Democrat looks down and plays with her hands as Trump hammers “Biden and his corrupt partners in Congress.”

Wasserman Schultz ignored her nap time when giving a response to the speech, calling the event a “revolting 2-hr awards show – with lies for commercial breaks.” She then added, “He mocked the sky high healthcare, home insurance and small biz costs most Americans like my SOTU guest face. Life is more expensive than ever. And Americans deserve better. I will fight for them 24/7.”
President Trump’s State of the Union address lasted for two-hours and featured a number of medals and awards being given to heroes from the military and first-responders. The U.S. Men’s Hockey team was present and received a standing ovation for their huge victory over Canada in the Olympics, along with chants of “U-S-A.”
