With movies today getting worse and worse, a throwback to the great movies of the ’80s is often fun. Even if a bit cheesy, they’re at least entertaining. Well, now one of the all-time greats from the mid-80s, 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop” starring Eddie Murphy, is back with “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.”
The new movie is currently in post-production and is expected to come out sometime in 2024, though exactly when it will be released is still unclear. What is known is that it will be released on Netflix, which released the trailer for the new movie on Thursday, December 14.
Netflix, posting the new trailer on X, captioned it by saying, “Don’t worry, they love him in Beverly Hills. Eddie Murphy returns in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Premiering Summer 2024.” Commenting what many people were thinking, one commenter said, “dear god, please be good and not ruin my childhood memories.”
We’ll have to wait for the movie to come out to see if it’s any good or if they butchered the story and character, as Disney did with Star Wars and Indiana Jones, and many fear will happen with any modern remake given the woke currents undercutting most Hollywood productions. However, the trailer does at least make the movie look entertaining. Watch it here:
IMDB describes the movie as being about Murphy returning to Beverly Hills for another investigation, saying, “Detective Axel Foley finds himself drawn back to the opulent environs of Beverly Hills to investigate the untimely demise of a long-time confidant.”
Similarly, the synopsis for the movie provides that Eddie Murphy’s character, Detective Foley, is “back on the beat” and that “After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.”
While Murphy will of course be returning to one of his more famous roles, others from the original will be coming back as well.. Bronson Pinchot and Paul Reiser, who played Serge and Detective Jeffrey Friedman, will be returning as well, and Kevin Bacon will be joining to play Captain Grant.
In the teaser, Bacon’s character, Captain Grant, asks Detective Foley, “We put our lives on the line every day. And for what?” Responding, Eddie Murphy’s Detective Foley tells him, “It comes with the job if you’re doing it right.”
Murphy, commenting on the movie being more difficult to make than when he was younger, told PEOPLE, “It was a hard one. I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore. It was an action movie. So it was a rough one. But we got through it.”
Similarly, he said, “It’s a really physical movie and I had to do some physical stuff…. I like to be on the couch, I don’t like to be jumping over and shooting and running. And I had to do some jumping and shooting and running. And as a result… at the end of the movie, I had a knee brace and my back is messed up. But the movie is gonna be special.”
