In a recent statement, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis criticised a tragic accident in his state where Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old illegal immigrant from India, killed three people after he attempted an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike on August 12, 2025. DeSantis described how Singh should never have been let into the nation, let alone hold a serious commercial license.
For context, reacting to this tragic case, he drew attention to Florida’s strict policies on issuing licenses or IDs to illegal immigrants, which he contrasted to the weak policies of California, which enabled Singh to obtain a commercial license.
In any case, beginning his remarks, Gov. DeSantis laid out the facts of the case. He stated, “You had an illegal alien driving one of these massive semi trucks in Florida …[and he] had a California driver’s license, of course…Well, this guy thought that he should just try to turn a semi truck around… and of course, that doesn’t happen on a dime. So you had a car coming run into it, and it ended up killing three people, all from Florida.”
Issuing a confident response, the Republican governor noted, “That should have never happened. He should never have been here. He certainly shouldn’t have obtained a commercial driver’s license from California. In Florida, we’ve stated that we won’t issue licenses to individuals who are here illegally,” adding, “We’re not giving ID cards.”
Describing the chaos of blue states, the Florida politician kept going. He stated, “Now, California, they do it differently. They invite people to come illegally. They provide benefits. They offer a wide range of services. I mean, honestly, some of them get treated better than blue-collar Americans out there with their policies.”
Explaining the massive issues this creates, DeSantis noted, “Over the years, we’ve worked really hard on [ID security], and then to have, like, a California send this guy in and create havoc for our state, that’s just fundamentally wrong.”
Suggesting a possible solution, the governor suggested that Congress needs to step in. He angrily declared, “But what it shows is that just doing things right in Florida won’t magically cure what’s happening on the Left Coast and in other places. Ultimately, Congress has the power of the purse. They do not need to fund you. If you’re a sanctuary state, they can remove funding from sanctuary cities. So stop subsidizing this.”

Still not done, DeSantis said, “You can discipline these states that don’t follow the law and incentivize law breaking. You know you could do that very quickly. You can also address another problem with this situation. This guy comes in from India illegally across the US-Mexico border… You’re coming from India. How many other countries are you going through? And then you show up at the southern border and say, silent, like, what?

Concluding his remarks, he expressed justifiable annoyance, saying, “Why didn’t you get asylum somewhere else? So they’re, they’re abusing the process and the statutes that we have in the United States of America, and they’re trained to do this. …I’d say 95% of the people that are claiming it, just factually, do not even come close to meeting what should be.”
