A newly shared video by Fox News has revealed that Democrats are trying their best to avoid questions concerning whether former Vice President Kamala Harris, who failed in her 2024 bid for the White House, should run again in 2028. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), who formerly served as House majority whip, was asked about Harris’ potential 2028 aspirations, replying, “I have no idea.”
Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) responded, “I have no idea who’s running, and we’ll focus on 2028 after 2026,” referring to the midterm elections coming up in November. While there is still plenty of time for Democrats to mull over who will be running for the highest office in the land, the responses hint at uncertainty about whether Harris would be the strongest candidate to represent their party in 2028.
Fox reported that the answers provided by House Democrats underline a reluctance to project what their party will potentially look like two years from now. “I won’t comment until I know whether she really actually is or not,” Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) said. Democrats took a severe beating in the 2024 election, losing the popular vote nationally as the GOP took control of the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives.
According to the report from Fox News, Harris, who failed to outperform former President Joe Biden’s election performance in 2020 in any county in the country, sparked curiosity about another run for president when she decided against running for governor of California. “In recent months, I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their Governor,” Harris said on Instagram in July 2025.
“I love this state, its people and its promise. It is my home. However, after careful reflection, I’ve decided not to run for Governor in this election,” Harris continued. The report acknowledges that even if Harris decides to run in 2028, she likely won’t be the only candidate with a national profile looking to reverse her party’s misfortunes.
Several other big-name Democrats such as California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, are all names that have been floated as potential contenders for the Democratic Party nomination. Each one has made a name for themselves through their vehement opposition to President Donald Trump.
Rep. John Larson (D-CT) said he believes Democrats will have a lot of options and not just from governors. “I think that’s her decision,” Larson went on to say of Harris. “But I believe there should be a wide open Democratic primary, and I think there’ll be a lot of contenders; you know, governors, senators. But I also think people outside of government will be interested in running too.”

“It’ll be a healthy experience, and that anyone who’s interested ought to run,” he added. Larson didn’t drop any specific names he would throw his support behind or provide any guesses as to who he expects will be a frontrunner in the race. Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) said that he wouldn’t rule out a potential run by Harris in the next presidential election cycle. “I think there’s definitely a lot of support still out there for her. And she seemed real sharp on the issues still. So, we’ll see how it goes. But there’s gonna be a lot of people jumping in on that one,” Ivey explained.
