Speaking during an appearance on CNN, a former aide to the Biden Administration Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg let slip the fact, one long suspected by many on the right, that there was a network of “resistance” coordination against then-former President Donald Trump that led to the many arrests and charges brought against him under the Biden Administration.
As a reminder, now-President Trump faced a litany of charges and court cases during the 2024 campaign. In addition to the cases brought against him by special prosecutor Jack Smith, such as the classified documents case that saw the FBI raid Mar-a-Lago, he faced Fani Willis’s election case and NY AG Letitia James’s asset claims case.
According to Lisa Smith, who formerly was an aide to Buttigieg, that multitude of cases wasn’t random. Rather, they and the many others he faced were organized against him as part of a coordinated “resistance” campaign. Such is what she told CNN during a discussion of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and what Democrats see as too much of a willingness, on his part, to work with Republicans.
Beginning by commenting on the resistance, Smith told CNN’s conservative contributor, Scott Jennins, “I agree with you: Democrats cannot only be the party of resistance. Then, commenting on impeachment and how it fit into the “resistance,” Smith said, “Like, we resisted so hard between 2017 and 2024. We impeached the guy–” Jennings jumped in to note that impeachment came “Twice,” at which point Smith changed subjects and started focusing on the other lawfare.
Doing so, she spoke about the litany of criminal charges Trump faced and admitted that he overcame that lawfare to win the 2024 election, saying, “We prosecuted him, convicted him on thirty-four felony counts. And guess what? He still got elected.” Jennings, sensing an opportunity to attack, asked if the case brought by AG James was “part of the organized Democratic Party resistance.” Smith then admitted, “It was a Democratic prosecutor.”
Jennings, posting about the matter on X, said, “I can’t believe it. They finally admitted it on live TV: The prosecution of President Trump was an organized effort by the Democratic Party “resistance.” Lawfare is real. The justice system was weaponized against President Trump.”

Sounding off in the comments section of his X post, angry commenters slammed the whole system. One, for example, wrote, “The DNC funneled $12,000 to prosecutor Matthew Colangelo in 2018 for “political consulting” before he joined Bragg’s team to target Trump. This isn’t justice—it’s a coordinated hit job using taxpayer-funded offices to settle political scores. The House Judiciary Committee’s report confirms Bragg’s office weaponized the legal system, cycling through theories until one stuck.”
Continuing, that account added, “When federal prosecutors declined the case, activists like Colangelo kept digging through every facet of Trump’s life to fabricate charges. The real crime? Corrupt bureaucrats turning courts into campaign tools while violent criminals roam free under Bragg’s pro-crime policies. This sham trial proves the “resistance” will burn the justice system to ashes to stop Trump’s America-First agenda.”
Another commenter called for those responsible to face jail time, saying, “I understand people think this is just a game…But this was a very real, very sinister, EVIL corruption of judicial system of the greatest country to have ever existed! All for political points and gamesmanship! People need to go to jail!!”
