In the wake of reports in mainstream outlets on right and left, namely the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, that detailed the utter state of things inside the Biden Administration, with sources giving varying degrees of details on Biden getting more and more incompetent and unable to do the job, the Senator who said Biden was “on top of his game” was pressed on that claim.
For example, one of the friendly reports was in the New York Times, but even it revealed he had issues, saying “[Biden] looks a little older and a little slower with each passing day. Aides say . . . it is hard to imagine that he seriously thought he could do the world’s most stressful job for another four years.”
It was United States Senator from Delaware Chris Coons, a fervent Democrat, who had declared back in February of 2024 that, in his view, President Joe Biden was “on top of his game.” Then, when pressed on that claim on Friday, December 20, in the wake of those reports detailing Biden’s cognitive deficiencies, Sen. Coons tried to deflect from and then defend his comments.
That came when Fox News Channel host Martha MacCallum pushed him to “reflect” on those lies. She during a broadcast of her show, “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” asked,“When you see all of this [reporting] coming out, senator, do you reflect on it in terms of the ramifications for the country? And your own responsibility to the country? You said this in February of 2024. Watch.”
She then rolled footage of Coons, in February of 2024, saying, “This is a man who is sharp, who is on top of his game.” Pressing him on that, along with similar claims made by others like him, MacCallum asked, “Your thoughts as you look at all of this reporting and things from your own colleagues, as well, coming out?”
Sen. Coons first tried deflecting from the question with a meaningless comment about supporting Biden’s record, ignoring the actual question bout the state of things in the White House. He said, “Well, Martha, I support President Biden’s record, as someone who has gotten passed year after year significant and consequential legislation.”
Then, after a lengthy back and forth about irrelevant, tangential subjects, MacCallum pressed him again, asking, “I want to ask you one more time. When you reflect on your own role in reporting how you saw President Biden and his ability to govern, knowing that the security of this country is the highest responsibility, way over any friendship or personal ties, do you have any regrets about not saying to others, ‘Look, is he fit to serve now, and is he fit to serve for another four years,’ senator?”
Cornered, Sen. Coons went from deflecting to defending, saying, “Look, Martha, the first time I saw an incident where President Biden seemed to me to not be on top of his game was his debate with President-elect Trump. That, for me, was a challenging moment, and it produced a several week process where I started asking my colleagues and folks at the White House about whether they had seen anything similar.”
Continuing, he added, defending his lies again, “I do not hang out with the president on the weekends. I don’t spend time with him socializing and in person. My experience with him in the time up to that debate led me to believe that he was fully capable of competently leading our nation, both from a security perspective and legislatively.”
