Rep. Ralph Norman questioned President Donald Trump’s decision to intervene in South Carolina’s Republican Senate runoff after Trump-backed Senator Darline Graham handed him a stinging defeat. Graham defeated Norman by roughly 52.5% to 47.5% on Tuesday after the president campaigned aggressively on her behalf. Norman used his concession speech to say he never understood why Trump entered a Republican-versus-Republican contest in a solidly red state. Trump gave an answer the following day, pointing directly to Norman’s decision to endorse Nikki Haley in the 2024 presidential primary.
The contest was held to choose the Republican nominee for the Senate seat previously held by the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham’s sister, was appointed to the seat following his death and then entered the primary for a full term at Trump’s urging. Graham and Norman advanced from a crowded ten-candidate primary on August 11th after neither candidate won a majority. Graham will now face Democrat Annie Andrews in November.
Trump did far more than issue a routine endorsement before the August 25th runoff. He appeared with Graham at a Myrtle Beach rally on Friday and followed that appearance with a telephone rally on Monday, telling voters that he had encouraged Graham to enter the race and therefore needed to help her finish the job. The president urged supporters to treat the runoff as though his own name were on the ballot. His involvement gave Graham a powerful advantage in a state where Republican voters remain strongly supportive of his agenda.
The Trump-aligned MAGA Inc. super PAC also spent more than $827,000 on voter calls and text messages supporting Graham during the runoff. As the Daily Caller reported, such heavy spending on behalf of an individual candidate has been unusual for the group during the 2026 primary cycle. Norman entered election night with backing from several prominent conservatives, including Senators Rick Scott and Mike Lee, Rep. Nancy Mace, former Governor Mark Sanford, and CPAC. Those endorsements were not enough to overcome Trump’s direct involvement.
Norman addressed the president’s role while speaking to supporters after the result became clear. “The president got involved. He has that right. That’s his prerogative,” Norman said. He defended Trump’s record and policies before adding, “I never understood why he got in this race.” Norman accepted the result and said he would move forward despite his disagreement with Trump’s decision.
The complaint came after Norman had already described Trump’s endorsement of Graham as a “head scratcher” during the final days of the campaign. Norman argued that his record in Congress and support for Trump’s agenda made him the stronger candidate. He also defended his earlier endorsement of Haley as a matter of loyalty to a fellow South Carolinian and said he would not apologize for it. Trump evidently remembered the endorsement differently when deciding where to place his political weight.

Trump initially celebrated the South Carolina result alongside another endorsement victory in Oklahoma. “I supported and ENDORSED two so-called ‘underdogs’ yesterday, one from South Carolina, and the other from Oklahoma, and they BOTH WON. Two great people!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Graham was one of those candidates, while businessman Mike Mazzei won Oklahoma’s Republican gubernatorial nomination. The president’s message left little doubt that he viewed both outcomes as demonstrations of his influence over Republican voters.
Trump answered Norman more personally in a separate Truth Social post on Wednesday. The president indicated that Norman’s decision to back Haley against him had followed the congressman into the 2026 Senate contest. “Ralph Norman had the look of a good Congressman (Not great, but good), but ruined his career when he endorsed Nikki Haley,” Trump wrote.
