During a recent campaign event, a reporter was loudly booed after asking Republican Vice Presidential Candidate JD Vance if the Trump campaign still endorses Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina Mark Robinson after a recent controversy came to light. The hostile reaction from the crowd is the latest example of Trump supporters rejecting the attacks from liberal reporters at campaign events.
For context, CNN recently reported on comments allegedly made by Robinson on a pornographic forum years ago. In the aftermath of the controversy, Robinson’s campaign has faced setbacks as other members of the GOP have distanced themself from the lieutenant governor. Amid the backlash against Robinson, the reporter tried to gauge where the Trump-Vance campaign stood on the matter.
The reporter asked, “Sir, I just want to clear up, does the Trump campaign still endorse Mark Robinson?” However, the crowd immediately began loudly booing the reporter’s question, shouting her down and interrupting her. As the crowd subsided and Vance encouraged her to continue, she said, “Second question about your debate prep. It’s reported today… It’s reported that you are enlisting the help of Tom Emmer to sit in for for Tim Walz. Can you talk about that choice and how you’re preparing for the debate?”
Addressing the latter question first, Vance said, “Yeah. Well, look Tom. Tom Emmer is a great representative from the state of Minnesota. He has not helped us out yet, but I think that we are going to try to call on him in the next couple of weeks, as we really start to, you know, think about how to how to make our best case during this debate.”
Regarding the question on Mark Robinson, Vance maintained that he was uninterested in debating the North Carolina Republican’s comments that may or may not have been made nearly two decades ago. Taking a neutral stance on the controversy, Trump’s running mate suggested that it was ultimately up to the voters of North Carolina to make a decision regarding Robinson.
“But look on the Mark Robinson question, kid, you’ve heard me answer it now two times I’ve been asked, I think, five questions now, 3 of those questions have been about what Mark Robinson did or did not say 20 years ago on a message board, as I’ve said, that is Mark Robinson’s case to make to the people of North Carolina. I’m not going to make it for him and the people of North Carolina, they get to be the judges of whether they believe him or not. It’s really that simple,” the Ohio senator said.
However, Robinson has denied the reports brought against him, suggesting they are fabricated lies. “This is not us. These are not our words. And this is not anything that is characteristic of me,” Robinson said. After being presented with the supposed evidence brought against him by CNN, Robinson added, “I’m not going to get into the minutia of how somebody manufactured this, these salacious tabloid lies.”
