In a significant announcement, Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) revealed how President Trump was able to provide a big break for seniors through the Big Beautiful Bill. Despite the positive news from the president, the comments were filled with people who felt they should have received more, despite the significant tax break.
For context, Trump has campaigned on several major tax reforms. In his 2024 campaign, he floated the idea of scrapping the income tax and replacing it entirely with tariffs. While this promise has yet to be fulfilled, Trump has made good on his vow to end taxes on tips and provide more take-home income to seniors and working people.
In any case, the Missouri Republican took to X, formerly Twitter, to share the breaking update for sections. He posted on May 20, 2025, ,” The One, Big, Beautiful Bill delivers tax relief and an increase in take home pay for the American people.”
Listing out the specifics, Smith provided real-world data. He said that this tax cut means that “The 4 MILLION tipped employees will see an additional $1,700 in their pockets. —> Family take home pay will increase by up to $13,300.—> Tax relief for seniors will increase the average take-home pay for qualifying seniors by approximately $450 annually,” concluding, “@HouseGOP
is taking President Trump’s promises and delivering results.”
Attached to the same post, the representative included a video discussing the same gift to seniors. He said, “According to the Council of Economic Advisers, the no tax on tips policy alone will lead to an additional $1,700 in the pockets of each of the 4 million different tipped employees working in communities throughout this nation. ”
Hammering away at the MSM narrative, he explained, “Family take home pay will increase up to $13,300 under the one big, beautiful bill. And the same study showed that tax relief for seniors, meanwhile, would would increase the average take home pay for qualifying seniors by approximately $450 per year. I’m proud to say we’re taking the President’s promise and going even farther by delivering even greater benefits for them.”
However, instead of being grateful, many social media users felt they deserved more from the Republicans. One such commented, “-Seniors paid taxes on Tips -Seniors paid taxes 40% on OT
– Seniors paid taxes for 40 plus years -Seniors already paid Taxes on the $ you took every check from 14 years old,” adding, “So now you try to give us a $450 yearly savings instead of the PROMISED no tax on SS?”

Another angry commentor asked, “Why are cuts and savings being pushed out to 2029? If you were truly honest about this bill, which you are not, you should tell the American people the full details of this bill. Delaying the cuts allows the continuation of green new scams, continues.”

Still not done whining, the user said, “All of Biden’s budgeted programs including taxpayer funded benefits for illegals, funding USAID/NGO’s until 2029…There is absolutely no reason for these programs to continue until 2029 unless there are people in congress or their families that are benefiting financially. Make all cuts immediate.”
