Famous comedian Chris Distefano recently explained to podcasting legend Joe Rogan the dire state of New York City. According to Distefano, criminal activity has reached such a dangerous level that it is far more concerning than any other period of the city’s history.
The comedian noted that he has lived in New York City his entire life, giving him a long-term perspective to assess the state of the city. Distefano expressed that the problems people have always heard about are now becoming visible.
“And New York now, it never felt that way. You know, my whole life there. But recently, New York has become a place, still great, still my home city. But the problems that you will always hear about, like, you know, people say, Oh, it’s a conspiracy or like, you’re watching that sh*t on the news. Now you’re actually seeing it,” he said.
Furthermore, Distefano stated that in the nearly four decades he has lived in the Big Apple, not once was he ever faced with a physical altercation. However, in the last year alone, he has been assaulted several times, where he was forced to defend himself.
“Okay, so for 39 years, I never had one altercation not one altercation on the subway or in the streets with any kind of mentally unwell person in New York. There’s a lot of crazy people but like, they don’t really fuck with you. Three times in the past year three times in the past year I’ve been physically assaulted, or like, had to defend myself against a mentally deranged, homeless person,” the comic said.
According to the comedian, the city’s problems are becoming so bad that citizens are beginning to question the way they vote, possibly searching for an alternative political solution. “And now you’re starting to hear people who, like would always kind of, you know, never, ever, ever even think about like voting any other way but the traditional New York way, are like, I have to now vote another way because it’s not safe for me anymore,” he added.
The comedian told Rogan that NYPD “can’t do anything,” which further worsens the rampant crime plaguing the city. “I feel bad man the cops… a lot of my friends or NYPD, they’re like, dude, we want to we want to f*cking police. We can’t I can’t do anything,” Distefano said.
He then shared a story from a friend in NYPD who described how criminals are being arrested only to be immediately released to the streets. “My boy was telling me a story. He’s like, we were outside the projects right? It goes on we see this drug dealer selling drugs, right we’ve seen we selling drugs and we know he’s right there selling drugs. we arrest them out right away,” Distefano said.
While he noted that things may not change over the course of a single election, Distefano emphasized that people are beginning to seriously question the status quo in New York City. “Even the people who were wearing like 40 masks during COVID are like I don’t want my my cities like being destroyed now. So now I don’t know if that changes in an election if people will vote what they I don’t know. But I’m like, I see it now for the first time ever I’m like fully seeing people injecting heroin. F*cking, it’s wild,” the comic stated.
