Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX), a rising star in the GOP, recently appeared on CNN, where he was pressed regarding a recent post he made on social media suggesting the country would be better off if Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) were returned to her home country of Somalia. Gill sounded off on his fellow member of Congress for the apparent advice she gave to illegal immigrants on how to evade deportation.
Gill’s criticisms of Omar echo concerns from conservatives around the nation over whether the Minnesota Democrat’s allegiance is to the United States or to illegal immigrants and Somalia first. Bringing up his tweet that made headlines, the CNN host asked, “You said that Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, US citizen should be deported to her home country of Somalia. Omar became a naturalized citizen at 17. Why did you do that?”
Gill responded, “Listen, my colleague, Ilhan Omar, she is an American citizen. She is a member of the House of Representatives. Clarifying his statement, he said, “I didn’t call for her to be deported, but I did say that America would be better off were she deported.” The Texas Republican proceeded to highlight the dire issues the United States is facing.
“I think that there is a serious problem, particularly given after the past four years of open borders, of Democrats facilitating the invasion of our country by illegal aliens,” he continued. Calling out Omar, he added, :My colleague Ilhan Omar was advising illegal alien Somalis on how to evade ICE detection. That is as un-American as you can possibly get.”
Continuing to criticize the conduct, he added, “It’s unbecoming of a congressperson.” However, the host contested that claim, asking, “Where are you getting that from specifically?” Gill informed her, “We have the audio of her doing that.” The host fired back, “She is a dually elected member of Congress. Her constituents put her there.”
Gill maintained, “She has a duty to uphold the values and customs of America, not to represent foreign, illegal aliens who shouldn’t be here to begin with. And I think that raises questions … to whom is she most loyal? Illegal alien Somalis or American citizens? I think that’s a very legitimate question.” After this point the interview came to a close as neither side would concede.
The American Tribune previously reported on the controversial comments from Omar allegedly detailing how illegal immigrants could evade deportation. “If ICE attempts to question you, you are not obligated to answer their questions. Just state that you are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions,” Omar told a reporter. “Disclosure of your name, immigration status, and the mode of entry is not mandatory. Learn the laws and prepare yourself and refrain from disclosing information that you prefer them not to know,” she added.
