In a ridiculous spiel delivered during CNN’s election night coverage on Tuesday, November 4, network political commentator Van Jones ridiculously insisted that the day’s elections, all of which were in blue states, showed that American voters are having “buyer’s remorse” over President Trump, and thus rejected him in the off-year elections.
For reference, the elections that garnered particular notoriety were in New Jersey, where the Republican candidate came close but lost, and in Virginia, where the radical Democratic ticket managed to beat out the Republican ticket, which was headed by a terrible gubernatorial candidate, Winsome Sears. Additionally, far-left Zohran Mamdani won in New York City.
So, Republicans lost in blue states, and though they should have done better, the elections appear to have been lost by bad tickets that GOP voters lacked enthusiasm for, costing Republicans elections that potentially could have been won with better candidates. It was not, then, a referendum on President Trump.
That, however, is what Van Jones claimed during his appearance on CNN, saying that the various demographics that moved slightly to Trump in 2024 were rejecting the GOP, and that showed they have buyer’s remorse. Doing so, Jones said, “I’m happy. You know why? Buyer’s remorse from Independents. Independents gave Donald Trump a shot, buyer’s remorse. The Latin community gave him a shot. You see, buyer’s remorse. Black men gave Trump a shot. They have come back home, buyer’s remorse.”
Adding to that, the CNN personality insisted that Trump is fighting for the “status quo,” saying, “Why? Because people are sick of the status quo. That’s why they voted for Trump the first time. That’s why they voted him out the second time. That’s why they voted him back in. People want change. And Donald Trump said he was going to do something about grocery prices.”
Yet further, Van Jones insisted that voters are furious over renovations Trump has made to the White House, presumably meaning the ballroom that donors paid for, saying, “He’s done everything, but he’s putting in gold toilets in the White House that he’s tearing up. He’s gallivanting around the world, and you’re seeing buyer’s remorse in places where Republicans had some hope.”
Concluding, the CNN personality insisted, “This thing is starting to settle out now. This is about basic needs that people have and basic rights people expect. That’s what seems to be under fire from this administration. And if they think they can spin and talk and spin and talk, and nobody’s going to notice that they just got proven wrong tonight.”

Vice President JD Vance, giving a more realistic assessment of what happened in a post on X, said, “I think it’s idiotic to overreact to a couple of elections in blue states, but a few thoughts: 1) Scot Pressler, TPUSA, and a bunch of others have been working hard to register voters. I said it in 2022, and I’ve said it repeatedly since: our coalition is “lower propensity” and that means we have to do better at turning out voters than we have in the past.”
Adding to that, he explained that domestic policy needs to be a major focus of the president’s, saying, “2) We need to focus on the home front. The president has done a lot that has already paid off in lower interest rates and lower inflation, but we inherited a disaster from Joe Biden and Rome wasn’t built in a day. We’re going to keep on working to make a decent life affordable in this country, and that’s the metric by which we’ll ultimately be judged in 2026 and beyond.”
Concluding, he noted that the GOP needs to stop infighting, explaining, “3) The infighting is stupid. I care about my fellow citizens–particularly young Americans–being able to afford a decent life, I care about immigration and our sovereignty, and I care about establishing peace overseas so our resources can be focused at home. If you care about those things too, let’s work together.”
