Radio host David Webb recently joined the “Outnumbered” panel on Fox News Channel to discuss the demand of Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago for reparations for descendants of slaves, a proposal that he claims will help decrease the amount of crime in the famously crime-ridden Illinois city. Webb was predictably contemptuous of the idea.
As background, Mayor Johnson appeared on CNN’s “CNN This Morning” program and discussed his budget for 2024, which includes $500,000 for a Commission on Restoration and Reparations. That focus comes amidst a 17 percent increase in crime in Chicago over 2023.
Speaking to CNN about the reparations task force, he said that the money would address the “cycle of violence” in the city, saying, “I’ve added a half a million dollars for restoration and reparations to address, again, the cycle of violence, which looks like school closings, closing of mental health facilities, of which I’ve invested in now. We’re going to open up two mental health clinics that were closed from two previous administrations ago.”
Webb, ridiculing the reparations task force during his appearance on “Outnumbered.” That discussion began with the host introducing the topic, saying, “All right, well progressive Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says the government has to get more involved in ending the city’s out of control crime crisis. By paying out reparations since Johnson took over from his predecessor Lori Lightfoot murders have dipped in the Windy City. But total violent crime robbery, carjackings, aggravated battery all up over the past year. Now claiming reparations payments to descendants of slaves, he says will help address Chicago’s, quote, cycle of violence.”
Then, after playing the clip of Johnson arguing in favor of reparations for descendants of slaves, she said, “so he’s asking for for billions of dollars for the federal government to deal with the migrant crisis in Chicago. But let’s hand out money for reparations, because that’s going to fix the crime problem.”
Then co-host Julie Banderas chimed in getting the amount in reparations wrong (it’s $500,000 for the committee, not $500 million), saying, “First of all, I’m not you know, a math mathematician, but he is putting 100 $100 million toward crime prevention $500 million toward reparations, he wants to figure out how to properly compensate descendants from slaves, but he’s not actually paying attention. He’s ignoring the crime problem, and it’s not.”
Continuing, she added, “So basically what he’s saying is that the crime problem is what do to all the blacks in the city, so let’s pay them off, and maybe they’ll stop committing crimes? What does he try? It’s absolutely ridiculous. How about giving them money? How about giving that money to the police and actually empowering the cops? I know you’re laughing? at you, I’m laughing. It’s ridiculous. I mean, I hate to call, you know, I gotta call a spade. Ridiculous.”
Joining in (and also getting the number wrong), Webb said, “Okay, high five, this woman all around, she has nailed it. He literally, the only thing he said in the beginning of that that sock we played was government because he believes that government should control everything around you. And the point of the where the money’s applied, doesn’t imply that blacks are the problem. And if you give him some cash, they won’t go rob your store. This is ridiculous. But this is what happens when you elect a socialist. And you get someone who is actually a segregationist, because he’s not dealing with the illegal aliens who are in these poor neighborhoods in Chicago, he’s not dealing with the effects of that. The fact that Winter’s coming in the Windy City, things will get worse for people who can’t afford heating people who can’t afford to take care of themselves. And they don’t do anything about the rising crime, because they keep reducing the police force by their policy, or the fact that people don’t want to join the force. So who pays the price? 500 million, divide that out by a number of poor people, by the way, who gets paid out money? Yeah, he gets paid. I’m a black man.”
Later during the program, Webb added, “How insulting is this to black people in Chicago, that you’re simply worth a check. Or a free debit card that pit somebody else paying for if you’re black, and in Chicago, this is your value. You might as well show up like they used to do in the old days. With fried chicken and cornbread and a van at the end of the street to go vote. I’ve actually been there and watched this play out. Cities like no work, they show up feed you vote for us. Get out of here when we’re done. This is that kind of insult. It’s condescending, it’s beyond condescending, and then it ends up being dangerous, because the criminals don’t stop the Crip I guess some of the Crip what happens if a black criminal is a descendant of slaves and they get a check. And the white criminal is not a descendant of slaves and they don’t get a check.”
