In what might be the biggest surprise of 2024, Iowa Hawkeyes star Caitlin Clark made women’s college basketball somewhat popular, with her team’s March Madness run drawing lots of attention from an audience that generally hasn’t shown much interest in women’s basketball in the past. She also recently appeared on SNL’s “Weekend Update” and, while on the show, hilariously roasted Michael Che, one of the show’s woke hosts.
Clark’s roasting of Che stemmed from his past jokes about women’s sports and the WNBA, so her chiding of him was not in response to his generally left-leaning politics. But, still, for many conservatives tired of him, it was fun to see him get mocked by the basketball star.
In the “Weekend Update” skit on which she appeared, Clark told Che she “wrote some jokes” for him. She then asked him to read them aloud. Doing so, Che read, “The Indiana Fever have the first pick in this Monday’s draft,” he began.
He continued, “A reminder that Indiana Fever is a WNBA team and not what Michael Che gave to dozens of women at Purdue University.” Smiling as he read it, Clark said, “Now that’s a good joke about women’s sports.”
Then, in another joke, Clark poked fun at Che’s Netflix comedy special, “Shame the Devil,” saying that it wasn’t funny and that her “pointer” for him is to be funnier. That joke was, “This year, Caitlin Clark broke the record for three-pointers in a single season, and I have three pointers for Michael Che. 1 – Be, 2 – Funnier, 3 – Dumba–.”
In another joke about his special, Che read, “Netflix’s top new show is ‘Ripley,’ featuring an eerie and unsettling performance by actor Andrew Scott. Critics say it’s the hardest thing to watch on Netflix since Michael Che’s special ‘Shame the Devil.’”

Clark’s jokes came after an introduction in which Clark chided Che for his “sexist” jokes. He began by quipping, “The University of Iowa announced that basketball star Caitlin Clark will have her jersey retired – and replaced with an apron.” Che quipped.
Che then brought on Clark, saying, “Well, the WNBA draft is this Monday, and Iowa star Caitlin Clark is expected to be the No. 1 pick. Here to comment, is Caitlin Clark.” Clark said, “Hey Michael, thanks for having me.” Che, sarcastically addressing her and the audience, said, “But nothing for my joke, whatever.” He added, “I am a fan, Caitlin, by the way.” Clark fired back, “Really, Michael? Because I heard that little apron joke you did.”
However, the sparring between Clark and Che was in good fun. Leaving the skit, Clark gave Che a parting gift. “And Michael, since you’re such a big fan, I brought you a souvenir,” she said. She told. him, “It’s an apron, signed by me.”
