In a typically absurd rant, Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz demanded the federal government “pay for what they broke” following Border Czar Tom Homan’s February 12, 2026, announcement ending Operation Metro Surge, a major immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota.
Continuing his bizarre rant, Walz described the federal presence as causing “deep damage,” “generational trauma,” economic ruin, and leaving unanswered questions about missing children and the deaths of violent anti-ICE rioters.
He expressed cautious optimism about the agent drawdown but focused on recovery, proposing $10 million in state relief for impacted small businesses and urging federal reimbursement for costs. Firing back, Homan pointed to major success in reducing crime and improving DHS cooperation, with a small federal footprint remaining for ongoing investigations
“The federal government needs to pay for what they broke here,” Tim Walz, a failed VP candidate, claimed, “There [is] going to be accountability on the things that happened, but one of the things is the incredible and immense costs that were borne by the people of this state.”
Doubling down, he added, “The federal government needs to be responsible. You don’t get to break things and then just leave without doing something about it. So, we’re going to be asking the federal delegation to be investing and doing the things necessary.”
Building on this point, he added, “We are cautiously optimistic … that this surge of untrained, aggressive federal agents are going to leave Minnesota, and I guess they’ll go wherever they’re going to go. The fact of the matter is they left us with deep damage, generational trauma.”
“They left us with economic ruin in some cases. They left us with many unanswered questions: Where are our children? Where and what is the process of the investigations into those that were responsible for the deaths of Renee and Alex?” the irritating Democrat asked.

Concluding his comments, he claimed, “So, while the federal government may move on to whatever next thing that they want to do, the State of Minnesota and our administration is unwaveringly focused on the recovery of what they did.”
Offering another view, Border Czar Tom Homan stated, “As a result of our efforts here, Minnesota is now less of a sanctuary state for criminals. I have proposed, and President Trump has concurred, that this surge operation conclude.”
“Additionally, federal government personnel assigned to conduct criminal investigations into the agitators, as well as the personnel assigned here for the fraud investigations, will remain in place until the work is done,” the Trump official concluded.
Reacting to the inflammatory comments, one conservative stated, “Are you frickin’ kidding? You expect the Federal Gov’t to pay for what they broke? What about what your MN agitators broke?!” adding, “Just take the $$s from the BILLIONS of hard-earned taxpayer $$s you & your MN cohorts fraudulently stole from the Federal Gov’t!!”

“No. @GovTimWalz We have bailed your city out numerous times with Federal money over stupid stunts you pulled and destroyed your own city. No more. You broke it, you bought it. No. Absolutely not,” another irritated conservative noted.
