President Joe Biden released a short video on X on May 15 after Trump and he agreed on two debate dates before the 2024 election. Though President Biden attempted to sound tough and confident in the clip and in the caption to it, most conservative commenters who saw it were joking about the numerous jump cuts needed for the short clip rather than anything Biden said in it.
In the caption, for reference, trying to sound tough, Biden said, “Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal.” He continued, in a follow-up tweet, “When I get up on stage, it’ll be me and this grassroots team versus Donald Trump and his MAGA minions. It will be democracy versus authoritarianism. Revenge and retribution versus a vision for our future.”
The comments were predictably ruthless and hilarious, with commenters largely speculating that the many jump cuts meant that elderly President Biden had to take several attempts to get the short clip right, which would be embarrassing for him given how short it is. The New York Post highlighted some of the best comments, many of which are included below.
Commenting on the clip, numerous conservatives chimed in, including Trump campaign official Steven Cheung, who said, “In a super short 14 second video, the Biden campaign needed to do 5 jump cuts because Crooked Joe couldn’t deliver a clean reading. Total disaster.”
Joining in, Sen. Josh Hawley posted laughing emojis and said, “Biden’s video has 5 cuts in 13 seconds. What will Biden do in a debate when his many handlers can’t edit and splice his sentences together.” Similarly, a conservative podcast host, Graham Allen, wrote, “Biden made five cuts in 14 seconds to say 51 words. I think the world knows who will win this debate.”
The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh joked about the jump cuts as well, saying, “Biden needed 5 cuts to make it through this 13 second video.” Similarly, a conservative writer, Jay Caruso, wrote, “This 14 second video had so many cuts its almost like a claymation film.”

The Biden Campaign pushed back on the commentary in a statement to the New York Post, saying that the “Trump campaign [is] desperate because they’ve been begging to debate and he got called out.” That person went on to claim, “So they are grasping at straws trying to make a common online [video-editing] tactic be an attack.”
Trump, posting on Truth Social about the debates, wrote, “Crooked Joe Biden just announced that he’s willing to debate! Everyone knows he doesn’t really mean it, but in case he does, I say, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, ANYPLACE, an old expression used by Fighters. I suggest Monday Evening, Tuesday Evening, or Wednesday Evening at my Rally in Michigan, a State that he is in the process of destroying with his E.V. Mandate,” Trump said. “In the alternative, he’s in New York City today, although probably doesn’t know it, and so am I, stuck in one of the many Court cases that he instigated as ELECTION INTERFERENCE AGAINST A POLITICAL OPPONENT – A CONTINUING WITCH HUNT! It’s the only way he thinks he can win. In fact, let’s do the Debate at the Courthouse tonight – on National Television, I’ll wait around!”
