New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez was back to attacking former President Donald Trump during a Sunday, March 24, appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. During that appearance, the far-left New York representative claimed that the former president “ordered” a “terrorist attack” on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
As background, some on the left are pushing to disqualify Trump for the 2024 election by claiming that he engaged in an “insurrection” on January 6. That is because Section 3 of Article 14 provides, “No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”
Further, outside of issues regarding his 2024 eligibility woes as related to the January 6 riot, Trump is under attack from DA Fani Willis in Georgia, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Juge Arthur Engoron, and Special Counsel Jack Smith. Those legal attacks have led to his facing a large number of indictments and court battles as the 2024 primaries wrap up and 2024 presidential race heats up.
It was to those woes that AOC and “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper referred during her Sunday show appearance. Beginning, Tapper asked AOC how the average voter might think about the race and Trump as a candidate after watching him face a slew of charges and accusations of wrongdoing related to those court cases.
Tapper asked, “What do you say to an independent voter or an average voter who looks at what’s going on with Donald Trump? You have his assets might be seized tomorrow. You also have the hush money case from District Attorney Alvin Bragg of New York. You also have the Georgia case about election interference. You also have the special counsel investigation on election interference. You also have the classified documents case down in Florida. That’s five cases. What do you say to a voter who says, well, that doesn’t look like he’s being treated equally before the law that looks like somebody that the government is going after?”
Responding, AOC claimed that Trump’s legal woes were because of his “corruption and criminality,” not politics, telling Tapper, “Has there ever been a president, Republican or Democrat that has been subject to this level of criminal charges, indictments, and investigations? This is not about party. This is not about politics. This is about corruption and criminality.”
Then, getting to the terror attack accusation, she said, “We’re talking about an individual who ordered essentially a terrorist attack on the Capital of the United States in order to retain power. That, that is not about being a Republican. It is not about being a Democrat. It’s about being an unethical individual who is subject and prone to criminality.”
Concluding, she claimed, “Unfortunately, this is the state that we’re in, and I actually think that the fact that it’s happening in so many places and so many jurisdictions cuts in the face of that. This is not just New York, this is Georgia, this is federal courts as well.”
