Speaking during a Friday, December 27 Newsmas interview, political analyst Mark Halperin warned that more and more Democrat attempts at “advocacy” to stop Trump’s inauguration will happen as that date draws closer and closer, with those efforts to stop the president-elect from becoming president increasing in intensity as the date draws ever closer.
As background, Halperin’s comments came in the context of a Thursday, December 26 column ing The Hill in which liberal attorneys Evan Davis and David Schulte said that Congress could stop the president-elect from taking office on January 20. They said that the national legislature could do so by rejecting electoral votes on January 6 and claiming President-elect Trump is disqualified under the 14th Amendment because of the January 6 “insurrection.”
In their Thursday column, Davis and Schulte said, “The unlikelihood of congressional Republicans doing anything that might elect Harris as president is obvious.” They added, “But Democrats need to take a stand against Electoral College votes for a person disqualified by the Constitution from holding office unless and until this disability is removed. No less is required by their oath to support and defend the Constitution.”
Halperin’s interview comments came when he appeared on Newsmax’s “American Agenda.” Focusing on what will happen as the inauguration draws nearer, Halperin, a political analyst, said that the Democrats were shocked by the November election of Trump in a sweeping national victory, but as that shock wears off they’re going to get their efforts to stop his inauguration back on track.
Noting that the article broaching the idea of stopping President-elect Trump was awkwardly posted during the Christmas season, but that they are going to continue pushing such ideas as the cycle drags on. He said, “It seems ill-timed, not just not in the spirit of the holiday season, but also given where we are in the transition cycle … we’re gonna see more of this.”
Building on that, the political analyst noted that the Democrats were shocked by the sweeping electoral victory of President-elect Trump, but that the shock is wearing off and efforts to stop the inauguration are, as a result, likely to get much more common. He said, “I think the left has been a little bit shocked by the election results. And I think as the reality of January 20th gets closer, I think you’ll see more opinionizing just like this.”
Then, commenting on what the motivation of the article suggesting Trump’s inauguration could be stopped was, Halperin said that it could have just been attention. He said, “I try not to speculate on people’s motives if I don’t have reporting, so I don’t really know. But again, The Hill likes to get attention, so that could be part of it.”
However, he also noted that the motivation could have just been reflecting the opinions that many on the left have, which is that Trump must be stopped. Saying as much, and reiterating the point that such attempts to stop the inauguration are likely to build, Halperin said, “But it also reflects a point of view that’s held by tens of millions of Americans … I think that you’re gonna see more manifestations like this as we get closer to inauguration day.”
