ABC’s “The View” has recently faced backlash from conservatives on social media after co-host Sunny Hostin implied that racism was involved in President-elect Donald Trump’s landslide victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. Commentators have claimed the “moral condescension” at play was a contributing factor in the Democratic Party’s major defeat this election cycle.
Hostin said during the post-election segment, “You know, I know that as a country, it’s very difficult for people to believe that racism and misogyny, they’re just alive and well. I think that we don’t want to think that about ourselves, our neighbors, our friends, but it’s my lived experience that tells me that it does still exist, even if your lived experience doesn’t tell you that it exists.”
Pointing to a graph showing a racial divide in political leaning, Hostin tried to claim this was evidence of racism. “And you know, the facts support that. I think we have a graph. If you look at the there’s a clear racial divide in who voted for the Trump as opposed to who voted for Kamala Harris. It’s very clear. It’s not only clear by race, but it’s also clear by education,” she said.
Continuing, the co-host said, “And so the notion somehow that that is not true, this is by education. Those who attended college voted for her at a higher degree than those that didn’t. … And so I’ve said that before, and there was so much backlash because, I think it’s an uncomfortable, inconvenient truth about this country.”
However, co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin pushed back on Hostin’s argument, noting that a historically high number of minority voters supported Trump in the election. “But his whole point is they didn’t vote for him because of racism and misogyny, ” she said. “They vote voted for him because they felt like, I think the biggest common denominator in this election is people want a good life and ability to provide for their family, and whether we agree or not with Donald Trump’s plans.”
Hostin interjected, pointing out that black people are one of the “poorest demographics in this country, but they voted for Kamala Harris.” Griffin fired back, highlighting that Trump received historically high support from the black community, asserting, “But there was a split, and more of them voted for Donald Trump than had historically.”
Griffin continued, “I think that there’s such a desire. If you really think the vast majority of this country voted because of racism and misogyny, you’re missing … most of my family, the best, a lot of my family doesn’t have college degrees.” Hostin cut her off, “But the stats are the stats.” Griffin further educated her co-host that you cannot extrapolate racism from the statistics, stating, “But that’s not. It doesn’t say I’m white. I voted for Donald Trump because of racism.”
Sharing a clip of the segment, the popular X account Western Lensman wrote, “Sunny Hostin: It’s an “inconvenient truth” that people voted for Trump because they’re racists, misogynists and uneducated. The sneering moral condescension here perfectly captures the attitude of the Democrat party that so many are rejecting. It’s American voter repellant.”
“It will be very interesting to observe legacy media dynamics over the coming months; if they are forced to come to terms with market and political realities, or if they dig in as the resistance, profits and ratings be damned,” Lensman added in another comment. Watch the segment below:
