Throughout the Biden administration, one of the biggest pain points Americans have faced is the state of the economy. Subsequently, consumer sentiment will likely play a significant factor in the 2024 presidential election.
Posing a challenge to the Biden campaign, undecided voters in crucial swing states have asserted that economic conditions were far better under the leadership of former president Donald Trump, where everything from inflation to interest rates was far more favorable. Demonstrating this sentiment, a panel of 8 “undecideds” unanimously concluded that Biden’s economy is inferior to Trump’s.
Recently, the video platform 2WAY conducted a research project called “The Undecideds,” where the first episode questioned uncommitted voters from Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin on their views of the economy. The group expressed that their “single biggest reservation” toward voting for Biden is the state of the economy.
According to Mark Halperin, one of the founding members of 2WAY, “‘The Undecideds’ is an unprecedented 2024 battleground state project that will bring together the most critical voters in the country, drawn exclusively from the seven states that will pick the next American president.”
“Through a unique combination of synchronized polling and focus groups, viewers will meet, learn about, and hear from fellow citizens in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona, and watch as they grapple with indecision about whom to support for president – or whether to vote at all,” he added.
One Wisconsin voter, Nathan, said, “I think he’s been absolutely disastrous for the economy.” Following Nathan’s comment others appeared to nod in agreement that they shared his opinion. “Raise your hand if you think President Trump’s policies on the economy would be better for your family, personally,” Halperin asked the group, to which every single person raised their hand.
Halperin stated, “President Biden argues that his economic record has been very good, said President Trump’s was not as good.” The comment triggered laughter from the group of undecided voters who obviously found Biden’s comment to be false.
“It was one of those focus group ‘a-ha’ moments when I asked the participants, some of whom voted for Joe Biden in 2020, which of the candidates’ economic policies would be better for their family. All eight decisively said ‘Trump’ — and some seemed to laugh at the notion that I would even ask the question,” Halperin told Fox News.
Halperin opined that Biden’s team has likely discovered this sentiment in their own voter research, where they likely understand the unprecedented challenge that economic sentiment presents. “The Biden campaign has likely seen this dynamic in their own focus groups, but it still probably makes them shudder and wince. There were issues discussed in the session on which Biden fared better, but he clearly has major problems on the economy with undecided voters,” he said.
Some voters expressed frustration toward Biden, claiming he refuses to take responsibility for the state of the economy. “I feel like [Biden] doesn’t even take accountability at all with what’s going on in the county. Not even accountability, he’s in denial that it’s happening,” according to Gigi, a Pennsylvania voter. Watch MSNBC coverage of the research project below:
