A small veterans group in the San Diego area has started taking action to try to defend the border in the area by placing concertina wire in gaps in the border wall. The group, which does so in an attempt to slow the flow of migrants across the border in their area, calls themselves “Border Vets.”
The Border Vets group was joined on a recent expedition by Marine Corps veteran Kate Monroe, a Congressional candidate in California’s 49th district who is running against Mike Levin, a Democrat. Monroe joined them as they hiked into the mountains to San Diego’s east and set up the concertina wire to help plug the gaps in the border barrier.
Posting on X about the border defense effort and how much razor wire they erected on February 24, Monroe said, “I SECURED THE BORDER AGAIN. Myself and 11 other people, the “Border Vets” went down to another viral border gap. Together, we securely put down almost 1,000 feet of razor wire, and now there is no getting across this gap. ”
Continuing, she used her participation in the activity to show that she actively works for border security, unlike those in the government who just jabber about it while doing little to actually make the border secure. She said, “This is something not even the president would do. Like I said at the end, vote for action-takers, in congressional and presidential elections.”
That came after a February 21 post about a separate trip to the border with the border vets in which Monroe made much the same point about Congress needing more action takers rather than talkers who do little to actually make things better. She began, “I secured the border myself. I’m the only person in America who came to secure the border.”
Continuing, she contrasted that activity with the little done by the rest of the federal government and country, saying, “No one else in congress. No president. No border patrol. Nobody in our country would do this. So I had to do it myself.”
Then, relating it to. her service in the Marines, Monroe said, “I put my life on the line to serve our country once when I signed up to join the Marines, and I’m amped to serve our country again in this way. However, it is dissappointing that I had to do it and that nobody else had the guts to do it.”

And watch her here:
Speaking to NewsNation about the border defense effort after she hiked to the wall and helped erect the concertina wire with the Border Vets group, Monroe said, “That’s not going to stop us or deter us from coming here. If we can stop them for one day, one hour, one week, we’ve stopped more people from coming into our country.”
Commenting on Monroe’s posts, people thanked her for taking action to help defend America’s border, but also warned her to be careful about doing so, as some have faced civil and criminal penalties for taking similar actions.
