Recently, United States Women’s National Team player Korbin Albert issued an apology to Megan Rapinoe on Instagram following comments the 20-year-old soccer player made that were allegedly hurtful to the LGBTQ community.
“For people who want to hide behind ‘my beliefs’ I would just ask one question, are you making any type of space safer, more inclusive, more whole, any semblance of better, bringing the best out of anyone?” Rapinoe wrote in an Instagram story. “Because if you aren’t all you believe in his hate,” Rapinoe added. “And kids are literally killing themselves because of this hate. Wake, TF up!”
Rapinoe signed the message with “yours truly, #15,” the jersey number that Albert wears. What apparently sparked the controversy are comments reposted by Albert on TikTok, where one video included a sermon that stated that homosexuality and “feeling transgender” is wrong.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions on social media. Liking and sharing posts that are offensive, insensitive and hurtful was immature and disrespectful which was never my intent,” according to Albert’s statement. “I’m really disappointed in myself and am deeply sorry for the hurt that I have caused to my teammates, other players, fans, friends and anyone who was offended. I truly believe that everyone should feel safe and respected everywhere and on all playing fields,” she continued. “I know my actions have not lived up to that and for that I sincerely apologize. It’s an honor and a privilege to get to play this sport on the world stage and I promise to do better.”
The American Tribune reported on controversial comments from Megan Rapinoe, where she claimed God was not real, following her injury last year. The liberal professional soccer player claimed her debilitating injury was proof of this assertion.
“Pretty sure I tore my Achilles, so the worst possible outcome. I mean, just obviously devastating to go out in a final so early. I know it’s my last game and that is devastating as well, but to go out so early, that also changes things. It takes a sub off a bench. Taking one of your best players off the field is not ideal,” the soccer player said. “I mean, I don’t deserve this, I’ll tell you that much. I’m not a religious person or anything, but if there is a God, this is proof that there isn’t.”
However, Rapinoe was rebuked by former ESPN personality and Christian Sage Steele. She labeled Rapinoe’s comments as “Narcissism at its finest.” Steele and Rapinoe have a history of arguing back and forth over their differences in beliefs.
“Sage says bio males shouldn’t compete in female sports and now she’s to blame for violence? This is an attempt to silence good-faith discussion and debate. Disagree passionately, say she’s wrong (& why)… but to claim she is responsible for violence is absurd,” Rapinoe claimed.
“Yes Sam…it’s absurd. And predictable! This is what happens when ppl allow their emotions to get in the way of FACTS & SCIENCE. Esp when they’re fighting to keep a false narrative alive. You said it best after Armour attacked you: “biology is not bigotry” #SaveWomensSports,” Sage hit back.
