In an unprecedented speech, Keir Starmer, the left-wing Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, announced that he would be stepping back from his party’s open border policies. Promising, “Enforcement will be tougher than ever and migration numbers will fall,” his remarks signal a significant shift for English politics.
For context, Keir Starmer is a historically unpopular leader who won his seat more through Conservative incompetence than any action of his own. Shortly after taking residence at 10 Downing Street, Stamer oversaw the tyrannical crackdown on anti-immigration protestors, which pushed his approval rating to less than 25%.
In any case, Starmer walked back from his previous stance on mass migration in his May 12, 2025, speech. The PM vowed, “Every area of the immigration system, including work, family, and study, will be tightened up so we have more control. Enforcement will be tougher than ever, and migration numbers will fall. We will create a system that is controlled, selective, and fair.”
Promising a whole new immigration policy, he added, “This is a clean break from the past and will ensure settlement in this country is a privilege that must be earned, not a right, and when people come to our country, they should also commit to integration and to learning our language.”
In a clip of the same speech posted to X, the Labor leader said, “These rules become even more important
without them, we risk becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together. So when you have an immigration system that seems almost designed to permit abuse that encourages some businesses to bring in lower-paid workers rather than invest in our young people, or simply one that is sold by politicians to the British people on an entirely false premise, then you are not championing growth.”
Concluding his remarks, Starmer stated, “You are not championing justice or however else people defend the status quo, you are actually contributing to the forces that are slowly pulling our country apart.
So, yes, I believe in this. I believe we need to reduce immigration significantly.”
In the comments under this clip, many conservatives were unconvinced by his speech. One such comment said, “Nothing signficant has changed about the immigration patterns in the UK. For a guy who has championed the current level of immigration before, you obviously have to question the motive of this suspicious and sudden change of tune.”

Building on this point, another user declared, “For the love of God, don’t fall for Starmer’s act. He’s spent his entire adult life championing mass migration. This sudden tough talk is nothing but panic over the rise of Reform. It’s all political theatre.”

Rounding out the comments with a pessimistic reaction, one account wondered if this was too little too late. The reply read, “Too late. Muslims have too much political power in the UK. It is still possible to reverse the demographic decline of the UK, but neither Starmer nor any imaginable Labour government will have the balls to do what is necessary to accomplish it. Britain will continue its steady transition to rigor mortis. Dead? It’s already been dead for some time.”
