Trump Slams Democrats for Pushing Bill that Would Expose ICE Agents to Serious Harm

Democrats are now trying to force ICE and CBP agents to remain unmasked when on immigration raids, something that would expose their identities to bad actors engaged in the illegal immigration pipeline, such as the Mexican cartels that have wreaked so much havoc in Mexico. President Trump sounded off on the Democrats for putting ICE lives at risk with the bill.

As background, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and other federal agents involved in border enforcement, such as agents with Customs and Border Patrol, have taken to wearing masks when on immigration raids so as to avoid exposing their identities to potential bad actors. Authorities in countries wracked by high levels of cartel violence, such as Mexico, have adopted a similar strategy for protecting their identities, and thus their families, from violent criminal networks.

But now Democratic Senators Cory Booker of New Jersey and Alex Padilla of California have introduced a bill that would force them to take off the face masks and wear an identification badge when on duty, including when on immigration raids. They introduced the bill on Tuesday, July 8, and called it the Visible Identification Standards for Immigration-Based Law Enforcement (VISIBLE) Act.

It is that bill that got President Trump to slam the senators when speaking during a Wednesday, July 9, lunch with African presidents. Prompting the president’s remarks, Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked, “Two Democratic senators now, Cory Booker and Alex Padilla, have a new bill out. They want to require CBP and ICE officers to have legible IDs, and they don’t want CBP or ICE officers covering their faces. Would you ever sign that?”

President Trump fired back that the only reason the senators are pushing the bill that they are pushing is that they hate America and want to see it be harmed by a bill that puts ICE and CBP on the back foot. He began, “Well, they wouldn’t be saying that if they didn’t hate our country.”

Continuing, the president explained that even he was surprised that they hate America and its citizens so much that they would directly put federal law enforcement officers’ lives at risk by exposing their identities to the cartels, saying, “And they obviously do. I’m surprised that they would do it knowing a little bit about them.”

He then praised the federal agents for putting in so much hard work, and slammed Democrats for putting their lives at risk with the mask bill. He said, “These officers are doing a tremendous job. They’re great patriots. If you expose them because of, you know, statements like have been made by Democrat and others on the left, usually mostly, I think, probably exclusively, you put them in great danger, tremendous danger.”

Sen. Cory Booker, for his part, defended the bill by saying, “For weeks, Americans have watched federal agents with no visible identification detain people off the streets and instill fear in communities across the country. Reports of individuals impersonating ICE officers have only increased the risk to public and officer safety. The lack of visible identification and uniform standards for immigration enforcement officers has created confusion, stoked fear, and undermined public trust in law enforcement.”
