President Donald Trump recently moved to nominate Sean Curran, the head of his personal Secret Service detail, to be the United States Secret Service director earlier this week. The federal law enforcement agency responsible for the president’s safety has come under intense scrutiny following the egregious lapse in security during the failed assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July.
During the infamous July 13 rally, in which a bullet grazed Trump’s ear while he was speaking on stage, Curran was one of several agents who immediately stormed the stage to protect the president. Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday to express what an honor it was to appoint Curran to leave the agency.
“It is my great honor to appoint Sean Curran as the next Director of the United States Secret Service. Sean is a Great Patriot, who has protected my family over the past few years, and that is why I trust him to lead the Brave Men and Women of the United States Secret Service,” Trump began his statement. “Sean has 23 years of Law Enforcement experience, starting his career in Secret Service in 2001, as a Special Agent in the Newark Field Office, where he conducted protection, intelligence, investigations, recruitment, and logistics support for the district.”
Highlighting Curran’s prior experience, Trump said, “During my First Term, Sean served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division, with direct oversight and responsibility of multiple protectees, and enhanced security plans for my residences. Sean has distinguished himself as a brilliant leader, who is capable of directing and leading operational security plans for some of the most complex Special Security Events in the History of our Country, and the World.”
Praising Curran for his bravery during the assassination attempt, Trump said, “He proved his fearless courage when he risked his own life to help save mine from an assassin’s bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania. I have complete and total confidence in Sean to make the United States Secret Service stronger than ever before.” The president concluded, “Thank you Sean, and Congratulations!”
The American Tribune reported in December when the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump released a report outlining the shocking “failures in the planning, execution, and leadership” of the Secret Service. A press release from the committee said, “Today, the Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump released adopted report text, “Final Report of Findings and Recommendations.” The report text, unanimously approved by the Task Force on December 5, highlights significant failures in the planning, execution, and leadership of the Secret Service and its law enforcement partners.”
Continuing, the press release said, “The Task Force-approved report also proposes 37 actionable recommendations related both to the security failures on July 13 and to overarching structural changes the Secret Service and Congress must consider strengthen security measures and prevent similar security failures in the future. ”

It added, “Secret Service personnel with little to no experience in advance planning roles were given significant responsibility, despite the July 13 event being held at a higher-risk outdoor venue with many line of sight issues, in addition to specific intelligence about a long-range threat. Further, some of the Secret Service agents in significant advance planning roles did not clearly understand the delineation of their responsibilities.”
