In a much-needed move, the Trump administration has completely ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia, effective March 17, 2026, affecting 2,471 Somali nationals in the U.S., including ~600 in Minnesota, along with 1,383 pending cases, citing improved country conditions and national interests. Explaining the situation, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized “temporary means temporary”, adding that the administration is prioritizing doing what is good for Americans.
For context, this move follows intense ICE operations in Minneapolis amid a fraud scandal, protests, and the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent, labeled a “domestic terrorist” by Noem. In reaction, woke Minnesota AG Keith Ellison sued, calling it unconstitutional targeting. Likewise, Mayor Jacob Frey demanded ICE leave, while Gov. Tim Walz dismissed federal accounts as propaganda.
Providing a statement to Fox News Digital, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem laid out the details behind yanking TPS away from the Somali migrants in America. “Temporary means temporary. Country conditions in Somalia have improved to the point that it no longer meets the law’s requirement for Temporary Protected Status. Further, allowing Somali nationals to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interests. We are putting Americans first,” she said, Fox News Digital reports.
Firing back with a snide response, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison freaked out at a press conference, saying, as reported by Fox News Digital, “We allege that the obvious targeting of Minnesota for our diversity, for our democracy and our differences of opinion with the federal government is a violation of the Constitution and of federal law.”
Continuing his hysterical remarks, Ellison alleged, “DHS agents have sown chaos and terror across the metropolitan area,” refusing to accept responsibility for the violent riots that have terrorized the city he is sworn to protect as massive amounts of fraud drain it of much-needed taxpayer resources.
Speaking about the Renee Nicole Good shooting, Noem labeled the woman as a “domestic terrorist,” asserting that Good “weaponized her vehicle” after blocking ICE agents on the road. Her frank comments prompted a massive meltdown from Democrats across the nation.
As we reported at the American Tribune, Frey has gone on a profanity-laced tear against ICE and the Trump administration. Speaking on CNN, he described ICE operations as “Wild and crazy stuff. You know, it sounds like she doesn’t believe a single word that she is saying right now. And, I don’t know if Donald Trump was drinking a glass of water, if she’d actually be able to speak.”

Doubling down on his absurd rhetoric, Frey alleged, “Because here’s the thing. She’s calling Minneapolis, like this dystopian hellhole. You know how many shootings we’ve had so far this year? Two. And one of them was ICE—two shootings in a large city so far this entire year. And one of them is ICE. This is a safe city. ICE. And Kristi Noem and everything they’re doing is making it far less safe.”
Defending his absurd comments, the controversial democrat kept digging.”Yeah, yeah. I said this was a federal agent recklessly using power that ended up in somebody dying, because that was a federal agent recklessly using power that ended up in somebody dying, which is exactly what happened.”
