Speaking during a Wednesday, September 4, event at Duke University, former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney declared that she is supporting and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris despite describing Harris as a “radical liberal” just four short years ago. Cheney was quickly mocked by the right for changing her tune, seemingly over her irrational hatred of former President Donald Trump.
During her speech, former congresswoman Cheney told the crowd at Duke University that she sees Trump as posing the real danger to America and so she is supporting Kamala. “Because we are here in North Carolina, I think it is crucially important for people to recognize, not only is what I’ve said about the danger that Trump poses something that should prevent people from voting for him,” Cheney said.
Continuing, she said that that is why she is backing Kamala, saying, “But, I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states. And, as a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
That’s a far cry from when, in a post on Twitter in August of 2020, Cheney wrote, “Kamala Harris is a radical liberal who would raise taxes, take away guns & health insurance, and explode the size and power of the federal gov’t. She wants to recreate America in the image of what’s happening on the streets of Portland & Seattle. We won’t give her the chance.”
Numerous conservatives took to X (formerly Twitter) to sound off on Liz Cheney and her current point of view, arguing that she’s going from being a Uniparty Republican to an open leftist. For example, conservative X personality Kylie Jane Kremer, a Trump supporter, wrote, “Liz Cheney belongs in prison, along with the others on the J6 committee.”
Similarly, conservative X personality Collin Rugg wrote, “2020 Cheney: Kamala Harris is basically a communist. 2024 Cheney: I am voting for Kamala Harris. Yikes!” Replying, one commenter on Rugg’s post wrote that it makes sense if you assume she was like this all along and just hiding it, saying, “All fits together if you add in a silent ‘actually I was basically a communist the whole time.'”
On much the same note, yet another conservative on X, Charles Correll, wrote that Cheney’s career is leaning toward Marxism, saying, “The arc of Liz Cheney’s career is long but it bends towards voting for Marxism.” Fox News Channel’s Joe Concha said, “Just a reminder that Liz Cheney may be a bigger phony than Kamala Harris… given she just endorsed a candidate she said this about to Fox’s Sandra Smith before the last election.”
Senator Mike Lee, commenting on the matter and questioning whether Cheney cares about conservative values and outcomes, wrote, “Liz Cheney endorsed Kamala Harris today. Does this mean she now thinks Kamala is a conservative who wants to reduce taxes, protect gun rights, and reduce the size and power of the federal government?”
Yet another, Mike Davis, wrote that Cheney finally showing her true colors is a “good riddance,” saying, “‘I’m Donald Trump, and I approve this message.’ Like her father, @Liz_Cheney’s part of the globalist uniparty. They’re happy to send other parents’ kids to die in their wars. And they’re happy to replace American workers with cheap illegal-immigrant labor. Good riddance, Liz.”
