In a huge series of statements on his Truth Social platform, President Donald Trump announced a major victory in his battle against the justice system that he and most MAGA Americans see as being weaponized against conservatives. According to the president, he has gotten some of the top, formerly pro-Swamp law firms in D.C. to agree to major restitution for their roles in prior lawfare incidents, such as the Russia Hoax.
As background, the victory announcement came just weeks after the president announced that his administration would be taking action against the firms, investigating them for their roles in knowingly pushing lies like the Fusion GPS scandal and for DEI-related civil rights violations. It appears that they backed down and agreed to aid the president and his administration in exchange for ending the potentially highly destructive investigations.
In one post on Truth social, the president announced that he had made deals with “Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Allen Overy Shearman Sterling US LLP, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, and Latham & Watkins LLP (the “Law Firms”)” and then announced a series of compromise deals to which they agreed in exchange for the Trump Administration ending its investigations.
The first is that they agreed to provide hundreds of millions of dollars in legal representation for key conservative causes. As Trump said, “The Law Firms will provide an aggregate total of at least $500 Million Dollars in pro bono and other free Legal services, during the Trump Administration and beyond, in the respective amounts set forth below, to causes that President Trump and the Law Firms both support and agree to work on, including in the following areas: Assisting Veterans and other Public Servants, including, among others, members of the Military, Gold Star families, Law Enforcement, and First Responders; ensuring fairness in our Justice System; and combatting Antisemitism. The Law Firms will take on a wide range of pro bono matters that represent the full political spectrum, including Conservative ideals. The Law Firms and their commitments are: Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Allen Overy Shearman Sterling US LLP, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, and Latham & Watkins LLP: $125 Million Dollars each.”
Continuing, he noted that they would also give up their DEI programs and hire the best candidates for the job, a major win that conservatives have been pushing for in recent years. He said, “The Law Firms affirm their commitment to Merit-Based Hiring, Promotion, and Retention. Accordingly, the Law Firms will not engage in illegal DEI discrimination and preferences. The Law Firms affirm that it is their policy to give Fair and Equal consideration to Job Candidates, irrespective of their political beliefs, including Candidates who have served in the Trump Administration, and any other Republican or Democrat Administration. The Law Firms will engage outside counsel to advise the Law Firms in confirming their employment practices are fully compliant with Law, including, but not limited to, Anti-Discrimination Laws.”
Further, in another massive win given what happened in the wake of his first administration, Trump noted that the top firms had agreed to not discriminate against clients over political beliefs. He wrote, “The Law Firms affirm that they will not deny representation to clients, such as members of politically disenfranchised groups and Government Officials, employees, and advisors, who have not historically received Legal representation from major National Law Firms, including in pro bono matters, and in support of non-profits, because of the personal political views of individual lawyers.”
Commenting on those wins in a separate post, the White House said, “President Trump and his Administration have entered into an agreement with these long established firms, which have affirmed their strong commitment to ending the Weaponization of the Justice System and the Legal Profession. The President continues to fulfill his promise to the American People that the Age of Partisan Lawfare in America is OVER.”

Then, in yet another post, President Trump announced that he had reached much the same deal with Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, LLP (“Cadwalader”), another Swamp law firm, though it would provide $100 million in pro bono legal aid rather than $125 million. Otherwise, the terms of the agreement were largely identical.
Commenting on that win, the White House said, “President Trump and his Administration have entered into an agreement with Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, LLP, which voiced their strong commitment to ending the Weaponization of the Justice System and the Legal Profession. The President will not stop fighting until we have ended Partisan Lawfare in the United States of America, and restored Liberty and Justice for ALL.”
