An Alabama law enforcement officer was recently killed on Monday when hit by a car while directing traffic outside of a church. Irondale police Lt. Mark Meadows, 60, was reportedly setting up cones around an intersection near the church when a midsize pickup truck struck him. The incident occurred just before 7 a.m.
Meadows was transported to the hospital, where he died from injuries he sustained during the accident. The Irondale police department shared a statement on Facebook explaining the incident. “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the Irondale Police Department reports the death of Lieutenant Mark Meadows while on duty on January 6, 2025,” the post read.
The statement continued, “The incident occurred shortly before 7:00 a.m. while Lieutenant Meadows was directing traffic at an intersection, when he was struck by a passing vehicle. Lt. Meadows was transported to Grandview Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is conducting an investigation of this incident, and any questions regarding the investigation should be directed to that organization.”
“The Irondale Police Department offers our heartfelt gratitude to surrounding police agencies for their support with this incident,” the message added before extending their condolences to Meadows’ friends and family. “The Irondale Police Department also wishes to extend our collective support, thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Lt. Meadows during this trying time. Grief support is being offered to members of the Irondale Police Department and others in need.”
Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr. commented on the tragic death, stating, “Lt. Mark Meadows was a treasured member of our Irondale family for over 30 years. He was a man of few words but always led by example and embodied the heart of a true public servant. Lt. Meadows will be dearly missed by his brothers and sisters at the Irondale Police Department, as well as by all of our City employees and citizens. We are comforted in knowing that he is with his heavenly father, and we will continue to cover his family in prayer as they grieve this great loss.”
The loss of Lt. Meadows sparked a significant response from the Irondale community, mourning the loss of the beloved officer. “The Irondale community gathered this evening to honor fallen Officer, Lt. Mark Meadows. We remembered him for his servant leadership, his faith, and his impact on our City. We covered his family and grieving members of the Irondale Police Department in prayer and comforted one another in fellowship.
Lt. Meadows’ patrol car will remain in memorial on the lawn of City Hall until the funeral services on Thursday. Citizens are invited to come by to pay their respects and give tribute to a truly great man,” the Irondale police department wrote in a follow-up statement.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey also extended her condolences in a statement shared to X. “My heart is heavy as I have learned of the tragic loss of Irondale Police Lieutenant Mark Meadows, a veteran and true public servant. I join all Alabamians in lifting up his family, the Irondale Police Department and the Church of the Highlands community in prayer,” Ivey wrote.
