Ramapo College of New Jersey recently had a swimmer on its women’s team put together a fast yet controversial race over the weekend as a three-year competitor on the men’s swim team switched to the women’s side of the pool and swam a record-breaking 100-yard butterfly.
This sparks outrage as Meghan Cortez-Fields took the podium for the fasted 100-yard butterfly in school history, with some saying that the move from the men’s sport to the women’s team was unfair from the senior. Cortez-Fields, a biological male, is now at the center of controversy in the sport of swimming which has already had its fair share of transgender controversy after the Lia Thomas saga unraveled last year.
Ramapo College made a post on X celebrating the accomplishment of Cortez-Fields, and that post was quickly picked up by Riley Gaines. Gaines has made it her mission to keep the sport of women’s swimming safe from biological males who wish to transition and take trophies away from the women competing in the sport.
Gaines wrote, “Ramapo College swimmer in NJ goes from less than mediocre male swimmer to a record smasher competing against the women… The Ramapo College Instagram account that posted the photo of the male swimmer has now deleted the post. They always hate the public attention after being called out for their discrimination and mistreatment of women.”
Gaines then spoke to Fox News, and gave a more full opinion about what she considers to be an injustice against biological women.
Gaines said, “Those who choose to remain blind to the injustice of allowing mediocre male athletes to become record-breaking female athletes are either incompetent or misogynists. There is no in between anymore. Women are being asked to smile and step aside and allow these men onto our teams all the while stripping us of opportunities, privacy and safety.”
She continued, “The incident at Ramapo College shouldn’t be a shock to anyone considering we’ve seen virtually the same story time and time again with no people in leadership positions willing to take a stand for women.”
Gaines has remained a strong champion for women in swimming, leading the charge to push back against he slew of biological males that are trying to enter the sport. Whether the reason is on of gaining a competitive advantage or not, she explains that biological males are able to dominate the women’s races even if they were just mediocre swimmers in the male game.
According to Ramapo College, “The original post of Meghan’s achievement was deleted by a peer who wanted to protect their teammate from insulting comments on the post. The College continues to post team and individual student-athlete achievements for all programs on our Athletics website. As a member affiliate of the NCAA, Ramapo College Athletics follows all NCAA policies, including the NCAA Transgender Student Participation Policy.”
