Karl Rove, a GOP strategist and contributor for Fox News, is currently getting raked over the coals by conservatives for writing an opinion piece announcing that he would be voting for a Democratic candidate, which was shared by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) who lost his bid for reelection in the Texas primary to Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Rove focuses the bulk of the piece on Bo French, a Republican statewide candidate for Texas Railroad Commission, by calling him out for being “racist” and then making the connection that guys like French are why he’s not going to be voting Republican in the upcoming general election in November. French posted a reply to a social media post about the results of a University of Texas football game, pointing out the number of Asian or Hispanic students in a celebration photo.
“I heard UT graduation this year looked like this. I didn’t believe it. The problem is now obviously far worse than anyone imagined,” French wrote. Rove responded in his article, “Mr. French’s not-so-subtle claim that UT has too many Hispanics and South Asians—he later said his issue is too many ‘foreigners’—is raw, uncut bigotry. UT admissions are based on merit, not race, and 90% of each class comes from Texas.”
Rove then mentioned that Cornyn was one of a handful of GOP leaders who condemned French and his comments and lauded him for warning that “this is how great political parties self-destruct.” The strategist then wrote that there were a few members of the GOP who were defending French and his comments, quoting one person who said that “anyone telling you to stay home or pull support from Bo is an enemy who supports gay race communism.”
He then writes about French having issues with non-Christians and women. Later, he describes how blue Texas was when he first came to the state in 1976, saying that “you could almost hold a GOP state convention in a phone booth.” Rove stated that the GOP flipped the state red by “fielding candidates who understood the strength of our state’s diverse population and welcomed voters who shared our conservative values.”
“The GOP has a growing number of Bo Frenches—and not only in Texas. Conservatism and the party it dominates have an increasing number of bigoted advocates of a ‘heritage America’ composed of white descendants of the original European settlers,” his article said. There are ‘just asking questions’ Jew-haters, misogynists who worship hypermasculinity, conspiracy nuts seeking clicks for profit, and religious bigots who won’t differentiate between Muslim terrorists and Muslim American patriots,” he added.
Rove concluded his piece by saying, “This November, I’ll vote for only the second Democrat in my life. The first was Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock in 1994, because I thought he would work with Republicans. The second will be Mr. French’s opponent, Jon Rosenthal. The GOP’s stables need a cleaning. This is a good place to start.” Folks on X wasted no time scorching Rove for his decision.

“I’m voting for drag queens, child mutilation, open borders, illegals before Americans, and Muslims screaming death to America,” one user said, mocking Rove. Someone else took aim at Cornyn for sharing the article, saying, “This is why you’ve been fired, John. You’d rather support the abuse of children rather than lose the visa lobby’s blood money.” Another user wrote, “Anyone who claims to be Republican or Conservative now saying he’s voting for a Texas democrat was never Republican nor Conservative.”
