Since Joe Biden took over the White House, illegal immigration has surged to record highs. The Southern border is like a Krispy Kreme with the “hot donuts” light on in terms of illegal crossings. Joe Biden undid everything former President Trump did to secure the border. Initially, Democrats applauded the flow of migrants until those same migrants began flowing into their cities. Suddenly, the script has flipped.
What was once solely the problem of Southern border towns is now the problem of sanctuary cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and others. At first, it was migrants being bussed or flown by governors like Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott, but eventually, the surge was so great that many migrants wound up in cities like New York, severely overburdening services and leaving local officials at a loss for what to do with them.
Now, as services and resources are running out, Democrat officials are singing a different, harsher tune in terms of immigration. New York Mayor Eric Adams has gone as far as to dispatch people to the Southern border to hand out flyers urging migrants not to come to the city, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul is also suddenly singing a more right-leaning tune about immigration.
On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Hochul appeared to do a 180-degree shift when she complained about Republicans not doing enough to secure the border. She said: “Well, shame on Speaker McCarthy and the Republicans in Congress, including the nine from New York State, who are complaining like crazy about the migrants but refuse to work with President Biden and come up with a sensible border strategy. It can be done. This can be done in a bipartisan way. Comprehensive immigration reform.”
When pressed by CBS host Margaret Brennan as to exactly what Hochul wanted Congress to do, she replied in. downright conservative tone. “Well, we want them to have a limit on who can come across the border. It is too open right now. People coming from all over the world are finding their way through simply saying they need asylum. And the majority of them seem to be ending up in the streets of New York. And that is a real problem for New York City, 125,000 newly arrived individuals. And we are being taxed.”
Hochul acknowledged exactly what the Southern United States has known since Joe Biden took over: we let too many people in. Liberal elite areas like New York like to pat themselves on the back for being perceived as welcoming until the masses are at their door. Hochul continued: “We are always so proud of the fact that New York has the Statue of Liberty in our harbor. We are one of the most diverse places on Earth because of our welcoming nature, and it’s in our DNA to welcome immigrants. But there has to be some limits in place. And Congress has to put more controls at the border and not in this budget threat, shutdown threat, talk about eliminating positions for Border Patrol when we actually need to double or quadruple those numbers. So, get back to work and do your jobs.”
What Hochul and the majority of Democrats won’t concede is under Trump, the border was mostly secure, and a reasonable number of migrants were entering. Now, coastal elites are discovering that voting indeed has consequences, and they aren’t one bit happy about it.
