President Donald Trump is continuing to turn the screw on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act and include voter-ID laws as part of any legislation seeking to fund the Department of Homeland Security. During a speech delivered in Memphis, Tennessee, the president went so far as to suggest that voter ID is part of homeland security, which some have taken as an indication that Immigration and Customs Enforcement could take over election security for the midterms in November.
“Voter ID is part of homeland security,” President Trump said during his address. “Think of it. We’re talking about two separate items, but they’re really the same. Voter ID is part of homeland security. And proof of citizenship is part of homeland security.” Trump’s comment has caused many liberal Democrats to think that he could be considering stationing ICE agents at the polls to ensure only citizens are casting ballots, and they are freaking out about it.
Controversial political figure Steve Bannon, a former adviser for the president during his first term, has issued a call for federal immigration officials to be placed in charge of election security. Bannon stated that the deployment of ICE agents to airports across the country to assist Transportation Security Administration officers could be a “test run” for them monitoring elections later this year.
According to Newsweek, Bannon said, “We can use this as a test run, as a test case, to really perfect ICE’s involvement in the 2026 midterms.” The comment was made during a recent edition of his “War Room” podcast featuring conservative commentator Mike Davis.
Davis gave the plan two thumbs up. “I think we should have ICE agents at the polling place because if you’re an illegal alien, you can’t vote,” Davis replied. “It’s against the law. It’s a federal crime for you to vote in federal elections. And so if you’re an American citizen, you should be happy that ICE is there, because you’re not going to have illegal aliens cancelling out your vote,” Davis continued.
This isn’t the first time Bannon has suggested the idea, stating during an episode of his show in February 2026, “You’re d**n right we’re gonna have ICE surround the polls come November. We’re not gonna sit here and allow you to steal the country again. And you can whine and cry and throw your toys out of the pram all you want, but we will never again allow an election to be stolen.”

In a viral clip of President Trump’s comments, many users support his application of pressure on Congress to pass the SAVE America Act. One poster said, for example, “Trump sounds like he is setting up for DHS/ICE to take over election security. Trump says “voter-ID is part of homeland security”. This is what the Dems have been panicking about. They knew this was the plan. This is why they don’t want to fund DHS and why they hate ICE.”
Similarly, another user on social media platform X wrote, “He’s backed them into a corner too b/c they got caught again using Americans as leverage. Why keep punishing TSA agents? Ya know? Why every time there is a shut down they end up not getting paid? Congress gets paid…”
The user continued, The Democrats caused massive delays which were widely reported & Trump was like ‘enough games, send in ICE’… & the lines got moved & people got to their destinations. It’s a perfect way to show Americans again that democrats hate this country.” Another said, “Democrats are pushing back because they realize that if DHS gains oversight of voter rolls, the decentralized, state-led system that allowed for the 2020 mail-in expansion will be overridden by a federal citizenship check.”
A third commenter predicted that things are going to get intense the closer we get to the midterms, writing, “It is all coming before the election. Leftist protest, we’ll escalate to the point where President Trump declares a national emergency. The military will be called out. The election will be one us citizen one vote. The democrats are soon to become a memory.”
