MSNBC is facing backlash from conservatives online after the network smeared President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. During a segment last month, a commentator on “All In with Chris Hayes” labeled Hegseth a “known white supremacist,” leading some to call for the network to be sued after the attack.
During the MSNBC segment, the guest said, “Add the Secretary of Defense nominee Pete, the Fox News commentator as well, because this is someone we can host. Important distinction. This is someone who you know is known to be a white supremacist, known to be an extremist whose platform, whose book is basically about his opposition to the advancement of black officers to the top brass.”
The clip was shared to social media by co-host of Steve Bannon’s “War Room,” Natalie Winters shared the clip on X, writing, “MSNBC: @PeteHegseth is a “known white supremacist.” Many users in the comments section subsequently sounded off on the network “I was going to say they should be sued for defamation but we all benefit when the media keeps lying. No one believes it, their ratings are tanking and it proves conservatives right. Trump won because of it,” one person wrote.
Others pointed out that this kind of toxicity from the mainstream media was a factor that drove so many Americans to vote for Donald Trump in his historic election victory. “Oh, so now we’re just going to call people white supremacists. That’s okay, I hope they keep it up, this is exactly the kind of crap that won us back the entire government,” another person added.
Sounding off on MSNBC, a network that is reportedly lookin to be sold, another user wrote, “No one is going to buy MSNBC. If it has a bunch of big defamation lawsuits up against it and liens for judgement. What are they thinking letting this on their air?” Echoing this sentiment, another person commented, “Nobody’s gonna buy these guys with ten billion dollars worth of defamation lawsuits hanging over their heads. I guess they’d better learn to code.”
However, in positive news for Pete Hegseth, The American Tribune reported on Vice President-elect JD Vance’s confidence and support behind the pick for defense secretary. During a recent visit to Western North Carolina, he told a group of reporters, “I’ll answer one question about Pete Hegseth, because I know that’s what people are focused on.” Vance maintained that Hegseth would receive a proper hearing before Congress rather than the legacy media. “Look importantly, Pete Hegeth is going to get his appearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, not a sham hearing before the American media,” he said.
“We believe that Pete Hegseth is the right guy to lead the Department of Defense. That’s why President Trump nominated him,” he continued. “We’re not abandoning this nomination … Donald J Trump, who just won an election by a very significant consent of the United States Senate, that’s who determines who the Secretary of Defense is. I fully support Pete. I think Pete’s going to get confirmed, and we are completely behind him.”
